Back in January I changed out most of my computer, and had to reactivate. Fine, that made sense. Then the NEXT DAY I had to spend 55 minutes on the phone reactivating yet again because I changed the damn sound card. Now tonight I decided to update my mobo drivers. Oh, apparently that requires a reactivation. Of course I can't do the automated reactivation either. So I'm calling to speak with some Philipino dude that will take forever to solve my problem.

Oh great. After 8 mins on hold I get a HORRIBLY broken up line with someone on the other end that I can't understand, and they hang up on me.

Now after calling back and waiting 5 mins on hold the guy tells me their system is undergoing maintenance and to call back in 25 mintes.

GOD DAMN IT I HATE YOU MICROSOFT

Buy a mac, you won't have to deal with activation... or upgrading your sound card :p

Yup. When you need a new sound card, you just have to go buy a whole new Mac computer. That just makes it simple.

One time for me when I installed a DVD drive (made a significant change)

I wouldn't care if I could either activate online, or just do the automated phone thing. But I can't. I have to wait on hold to talk to some non-native English speaker on a bad phone connection and then try to convey something like 56 numbers back and forth correctly. It's retarded, especially when I didn't even change any hardware!

You complain about it, but yet you submit to it and agree to pay for their products. That's just saying "thank you sir, may I have another". I won't pay for their products. Period. I'll get them free or I'll use Linux or <gasp> Apple.

Me either:confused:

Most changes that I've made the auto activation worked with no problem (add hardware, remove hardware, reinstall OS)

I just recently gutted my machine and changed mobo, cpu, ram and opticals and did a fresh install. I was certain it would take a phone call to reactivate and it did, but it took maybe 5-10mins and I was helped by a very courteous lady. I was somewhat concerned as I have an OEM copy of XP and since I was pretty much completely replacing my machine I thought they might give me a hard time, but no problems whatsoever.

I've been putting off upgrading from Windows 2000 for as long as possible. When I absolutely HAVE TO, to run newer programs, I'll only buy Vista/XP/whatever once I find a crack for it that gets rid of the activation. That's just because if I shell out $200 for a piece of software, I should'nt be forced to ask permission to use it whenever I change something :|

It's things like that which make people downloaded pirated versions. The thieves never have activation hassles, only the paying customers get screwed.

i just called msft today because my bluetooth keyboard is acting up. just asked for my product id number of the keyboard and the lady on the phone sent me a brand new set, meaning i get an additional mouse too!

kudos to msft for once.

activation is a pain in the butt, coming from me who has dealt with it for years.
