Holy crap! Hamas Orders Halt to Suicide Bombings!

(!) :Q

Source

<< GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - The militant group Hamas on Friday ordered a halt to suicide bombing attacks and mortar barrages at Israel, according to an official leaflet circulated by the Islamic group in Gaza.

Hassan Youssef, a senior Hamas official in the West Bank, confirmed that the organization made a decision to stop the suicide bombings, which have killed dozens of Israelis and wounded hundreds during 15 months of violence.

Youssef told The Associated Press that the decision was made ``to preserve Palestinian unity.'' It came after a day of clashes in Gaza between Palestinian police and Hamas backers, as police tried to arrest a Hamas leader and stop a Hamas cell from firing mortars at Israeli targets.

The leaflet said the ban on suicide bomb attacks and mortar firing was in effect ``until further notice.'' It said all members of the group, including the military wing, must abide by the decision. >>

Are they being serious about this? Also, does this mean that they're gonna stop having kids throw rocks at IDF, border guards, policemen, etc.?

Comments?

So what are they going to do with all the suicide bombers in waiting they have trained?? Is'nt that the sh!ts..trained all your friggin life to blow your self up and now they lay you off. What's a suicide bomber to do?? Suicide??:Q

That would be the biggest irony of all 🙂...

On a serious note, it looks like a Civil War might be in the making...these guys just might have the chance to be put to use

heh, maybe this was their strategy all along🙂 screw arafat with bombings and stop em when he's reduced to nothingness🙂

heh always funny when b0mbrman posts about ugh..suicide bombers🙂

The question is, does this help?
Hamas isn't the only militant group there, and besides, how long before a 'RealHamas' will show up, just like the RealIRA came when the IRA wanted a cease-fire?

they are flexing their muscles, telling the world that Arafat is not the one running things in Palestine. Maybe US should put them in their place like what they just did to the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

"they" don't "have" the kids do this...

You cannot hit an organisation like that easily, they're spread throughout the whole country, as well as the neighbouring ones. If you start bombing anyone who might be a member you will just give the population more reason to support them.

This soldier looks awful young
More coming in

[edit]Oops. Looks like I misread this...I thought you said they don't have the kids to do this...Anyhow, there's some authority figure (parents perhaps?) who's encouraging the rock-throwing or is at least not stopping it

Sounds like somebody needs a Union!

Folks, had Arafat and the majority of Palestinian Arabs attacked Hamas and the other groups, rather than back them unconditionally (or ignore them), THIS would have happened a LONG time ago. ONLY the Palestinian Arabs can stop their own terrorists. The countries and people these terrorists attack can only attack back in an effort to protect themselves, but will invariably harm innocents.

In other words, Hamas and the other terrorist organizations are directly responsible for civilian casualties among Palestinian Arabs... and it finally looks like the Palestinian Arabs have had enough of them provoking Israel. (Say you and a buddy are walking down a trail, and he attacks a wasp nest. Who do you blame for the inevitable stings, the wasps, or your buddy?)

We'll see how long it lasts... and if the Palestinian Arabs stop the other groups as well.

Hmmm, in the BBC article here, it says that Hamas has merely "suspended" suicide bombing and "reserves the right" to continue again when they deem necessary

Which means that the Palestinian Arab population and their leader need to keep up the pressure, and weed these maniacs out. These organizations only exist at their present level because of popular support by the general population.

<< So how do they punish the violaters?

Kill them?

Imprisoning them would be a good start. STOP the tolerance of these groups that has been going on for 5 decades, and has continued under Arafat. Public opinion must be swayed against them as well. As long as the public supports these maniacs, they will continue to thrive.

i'm curious to see sharons reaction to this. I doubt anything will happen, it's a smart move of hamas to shift the blame to the israeli government.

Actually, I doubt Hamas is doing this for that reason. Arafat has been forced to come out against the Terrorists, and their activities have made the Palestinian Arabs look VERY bad in the world's eyes. It's a smart move, yes, but one they're being forced to make, not one they're making because of any brilliant plan.

you're probably right there's some pressure on them, but since hamas has alot of support amongst the common people, even more than arafat, i doubt they're very worried about his actions against them.

i wonder what sharon will say now, seeing how he had it easy during his entire period, having to make no other statement than: we don't talk until the violence stops. We'll see what he has to say now.

The artcle seems to suggest that it is divsions among the people, i.e., "to preserve Palestinian Unity." Things change, and it appears that the common folk are seeing Hamas as damaging any chance they have at gaining a damn thing.

And unless the other groups stop, AND the bombings actually stop, my bet is that Sharon will do nothing different. IF the bombings actually do stop, then we see more peace negotiations. As it stands, this is only one of many terrorist groups. It's a start, but it's not an end...yet. I hope it is the start of the end, but I have my doubts. Actions speak louder than words.

Hamas' popularity is higher than ever, not because of the bombings, but because of the social status of hamas. If a family is starving, they can turn to hamas to get help. That's the other side of hamas, and that's how they got their popularity. You don't get popular amongst a population with war, you get popular by providing people food.

hamas also has it easy, it's cheap to do this stuff on a case for case base, and it's great for popularity. On the other hand, the PA has it really hard, they have little resources because of the poor population, and they need alot of money to build up their nation from the ground.

the common man thinks: PA is a bunch of jerks who drive around in big cars, selling our land to the israelis, and they can't even help me with a job, clean water and food. On the other hand, hamas is always prepared to give me a bread if i'm starving, and they're fighting the opressor too.

Hamas is now becomming the victim of it's popularity, on one side, they need to keep the militants happy by bombings and other crap. On the other hand, their popularity gives them a bigger international status, so if they don't want to talk about peace, the international community thinks the palestinians as a whole don't want peace. And not only that, but they become political enemies of the PA, so they've got to make sure to not piss off the government too much.

hamas is much more than a terrorist organisation, that's why the israelis/palestian gov knows where to find them. Think about it, how else could they know where to go/bomb?
