Holy crap! Google buying Motorola!

What the hell, this makes little sense. Google will now compete with their customers on a massive scale.

They should have purchased RIM, eliminate a major OS competitor, take the patents, slap counter lawsuits on Oracle, Apple and Microsoft, integrate the best features and abilities of Blackberry OS into Android and sell the hardware division to HTC (or another vendor).

Well, actually, they're only buying a small piece of Motorola...not the entire company.
Motorola is not what is used to be. Motorola spun-off Motorola proper (the semiconductor business) to form Freescale a while back. They recently divided it up again, separating the cell phone business from Symbol / cable-box stuff.

For some reason getting visions of 3DFX buying STB. Compete with your competition and reduce your market presence.

Or is Google buying it for the patents? They will spin off the handset portion of the company?

They wanted the patents from Motorola. I was wondering what the hell happened to Motorola, they were the communications king for so long. Also, they offered something like a 60% premium on the stock price for the offer. They gave motorola an offer the shareholders couldn't refuse.

It will be some time before this clears regulatory hurdles.

They started making shitty phones and didn't support their customers buying their shitty phones, that's what happened

I had a Motorola Milestone (GSM version of the Droid). It was by far the most buggy piece of crap I ever had.

Google is basically paying $12B for a patent portfolio. Motorola has a huge number of patents covering phone and communications technology, and Google knows that they can use that portfolio to play rough the way Apple has started to do. They know the one threat to android is the lawsuits apple / microsoft file, so this will give them the ammo to say "not so fast, or I'm coming after you the same way".
