My old boss might want to get rid of it because of high maintainece costs. I think my sister is going to buy it!!! Do those code scanner/reset tools really work?

Just for the reason your boss wants to get rid of it I hope your sister can deal with the costs. I HATE maintenance costs on cars. HATE HATE HATE. I'd rather sink more into a montly payment because at least then I don't get broad-sided by a $1000 fix of the transmission or something, like what happened with my last vehicle. ARGH!

Well, he ALWAYS brought it to a BMW shop to even the the oil changed. Since people don't know how to reset the Change Oil light on the BMWs. There is a reset tool for it so you can do it at home and error code scanners to diagonse problems in the comfront of your own home :)

Basic maintainace is high but the reset tools do work. The good think is you don't have to change the oil every 3000 miles. My brother's old 540i Sport went 10,000 miles between oil changs and that was under heavy driving. The "oil lights" automatically adjust the interval. Most BMWs take 5W-40 synthetic that has very good life.

EDIT: Ahh. you know about the "Oil Lights"

Well if its in good condition that seems like a good deal - if the car is a pain in the butt for her she can probabaly sell for more...

Is the original dealer close to where your sister lives? If you go back to the original dealer. You also get a free loaner car for the duration of the service.

Only downside is that a 528 has a small ass engine....barely enough to drive that thing..I'd want a 540

Kinda like i would NEVER buy a 318!

The power in the 528s is decent. You won't be spinning your wheels at every launch. Plus extra power just means there is more of a chance of meeting your local smokey. BMW geared the transmission pretty well.

The 5 Series was also the safest car ever tested when they first crashed it. The comment was, "If all cars were as safe as the 5 Series, there would be no need to carry out these tests." Can't go wrong with an endorsement like that.

That is an excellent car. Yes, the oil light reset tools work. (I have one.) Go to the BMW Car Club and look thru their classifieds for a used one. (www.bmwcca.org) If you want a new one they are advertisied in the back of many car mags. (www.peakeResearch.com)

Even though that is an entry level 5 series she will really enjoy the quality and driving experience. Nothing comes close.

Yep those reset tools work great. Bought one for our 92 525i and no complaints.

We used to get charged $75 each time.

Urban,

Is this not the same sister that refuses to give your dad some money
for household expenses? And now she wants to buy herself a BMW?

Tell her to go for it, thats an awesome price. My dad used to have a 525i, it has some decent power, its geared mostly for the highway though, so there won't be a huge amount of power until you get going at the higher speeds. A performance chip improves things a lot though. You can get reset tools, I've seen them in the BMW catalog I get (Bavarian something or other..)

I saw a newer M3 in a parking lot today, those are pretty nice also. I've seen a 98 sedan for $28,000, in upstate NY.

She was going to buy a Integra (2001) for the same price.
