Holy Crap! 1.6A @ 2.66 Ghz = 166FSB, maxed out.

good lord!

163fsb using crucial pc2100, no ramsinks or anything like that
1.6A from malay, retail heatsink
1.65V, have not tried lower

2.603ghz, have not tried higher.. installing programs..

also, this is the 3rd time i've activated my windows xp. i've switch ocmputers 2 times in the last month, making this the 3rd time.. i guess i have to call them.

EDIT: final OC: 163FSB.

www.ghg.net/shukuo/p4/

wcpuid and sandras.. where do i find out my ramspeed, PCI, AGP ETC?

EDIT2: final final OC: 160Fsb

163 failed in some burn-in tests. but i'd still like to think i did a 1ghz overclock. perhaps if i invested in a better heatsink and had DDR ramsinks, i could go higher, but why spend more money? also, a homemade video 1;30 of me and my computer! =)

EDIT3: FINAL MAXED OUT OC. 2.66GHZ

it posted at 170fsb, but was quickly bsoded in winxp, lowered it down until i could get in here.. now im off to do sandra and seti, to test its stability, which i doubt very much.

Wowzers, almost a gigahertz OC -- with a retail HSF no less -- very nice :Q

Say, what mobo is that sucker running on?

Good ol' Asus :Q Thanks 🙂

what are your CPU temps reading? also, is your RAM running at 160MHz FSB also, or is it locked at 133MHz? (didn't THG say that any CPU FSB overclock above 133 would lock the RAM at 133, or am I remembering wrong?)

<< (didn't THG say that any CPU FSB overclock above 133 would lock the RAM at 133, or am I remembering wrong?) >>

above 133, the ram speeds get locked at the same speed as the FSB

ah ok, glad to know i was mistaken! 😀

So is it finally worth it to go P4?

I have just about all my components except Mobo/CPU/Mem/Powersupply. I've just been waiting for the sweet spot. What are you guys' thoughts? Is it still more cost effective to go AMD, or has the ball changed hands?

What are the benchmarks on a system with this type of overclock vs. an XP 1800+ or so (Gaming, media processing, scientific calculations)?

Thanks

Ummm...well.... let's see....If we subtract the two and multiply.... Um.... NORTHWOOD!!!!!!!!!!

<< Bangsailio, any mouse troubles? Which mouse do you use with that system? >>

no mouse troubles.. why would i have them? logitech blue optical on ratzpad =)

<< Wow! I'm only gettin 2.33 right now. Where did you get your chip from? >>

googlegear

<< how long does it take you to calculate an average seti wu ??? >>

never run seti before, let me go dl it. i had always run RC5.

<< what are your CPU temps reading? >>

better than i expected, 40 idle, 53 max

<< Is it still more cost effective to go AMD, or has the ball changed hands?

<< well i dont know. i think i have a 1ghz overclock right here.. for $141...

T-Bred will sport a .13Micron process, a 166MHz DDR FSB/Memory bus, IBM SOI, and likely SSE2. The current AthlonXP bests the P4 at a 550Mhz clock disadvantage.

Definitely wait for the T-bred to launch before building a new system, it'll be sweet watching it step on the Northwood at an 800-1000Mhz disadvantage. 🙂

Ya ok. And one day you'll be dead cause your always waiting for the next best thing.

2.3-2.6 Ghz for $145 with no heat or noise and complete stability. Can't beat that right now. No reason to wait.

I have to advise a friend by tonight what mobo/cpu/RAM to buy. I've already told him he needs a 1.6A, but what mobo are people going with most? He's willing to spend the cash for RDRAM, are i850 boards getting decent OC's as well, or is it really a DDR game at this point?

Viper GTS <-- Not too up on P4 hardware, loves his dualies

<< He's willing to spend the cash for RDRAM >>

The crazy thing is that RDRAM is the same if not cheaper than DDR now.

Googlegear has Samsung PC800 128 MB for only $36 right now. So for $72 you have 256 MB of quality ram, whereas good DDR is going for ~ $80-90/ 256MB after the recent price hike.

512 MB Samsung (2x256) -$152 + shipping
512 MB Crucial PC2100 -$158 shipped

I was set on getting a P4 1.6a with either the p4b266 or p4s333, but now I am considering i850 after seeing how it is still the peformance leader. I know that the RDRAM cannot overclock as well as DDR, but can the motherboards still hit a high FSB so I could get a 1.6 to 2.4, while running the ram at a lower clock?

if ur always going to wait u might as well put away your money. also, how much does that "current" xp cost? probably not $140.. and a 2.6ghz P4 probably is on par if not over it.

as for the RDR, i seen reports that most RDR's can hit 1066 speeds now and the platform to do it on is a TH7-II raid. however, i dont know since i dont own one. and i also swear by asus. i dont like abit one bit.

That's what I really need to know, is i850/RDRAM capable of taking P4's up into the 160+ FSB range, or should he stick with DDR?
