Yet another news story about how bad Windows 8 sucks. This time for developers.

Developers of ad-supported apps for Windows 8 have been left high and dry for the month of April with no in-app advertising.

Starting on March 31, ads provided to ad-supported Windows 8 apps have been almost completely absent

I'd like to see a poll of how many IT professionals actually used windows 8 with a open and unbiased mindset before making decisions on it.

Half the the people in this industry I've talked to haven't used it, but already hate it.

So you are saying that someone can truly have an educated opinion on cats without ever owning or living with one? That is the only way your analogy works here in regards to people forming an opinion of Windows 8 without ever using it.

Bit of an oxymoron. When I tried it out for a few days, I never got the impression IT professionals are the group Microsoft had in mind - at all.

It really isn't. This would be like someone who heard a bunch of horrible things about cats and decided they don't like cats without really sitting down with someone who owns and enjoys a cat for a counter point.

I've never been a microsoft fan. I haven't even owned a windows machine in close to 7 years. My new job required me to switch so instead of just assuming windows was shit, I gave it a open mind and really sat down to work with it to get my work done.

What I've found though a month of using windows 7 and 8 is that both are pretty good operating systems (as long as I don't hold not being *nix against them). They are stable, fast, and no longer suffer the same issues I had the last time I used a windows operating system.

Of the two I prefer windows 8. It's cleaner, faster, and there are really no roadblocks to getting my work done. The metro interface is a non-issue. The only issue I see is that people are upset it isn't 100% exactly like the last os. I say get over it.

ahh, so a 5-10 minute test drive of windows should just about do it then... which, it so happens is just about what people will do at best buy on a new win8 computer before deciding not to buy.

What happens when MicroSoft takes the decision away from us? Do we go over the cliff with them?

Logically, Microsoft shouldn't care whether you buy Windows 7 or Windows 8 - either way, Microsoft makes money. More, the IT professionals are mostly installing on hardware whose use case makes tablets and touch screen notebooks useless, so they aren't going to be migrating to a full touch OS no matter what.

Relying on logic to win in Microsoft is a pretty bad bet, though. Logic wouldn't have seen Microsoft systematically working to prevent users who know enough to care about their UI from restoring the start menu and booting to desktop, but that's what they did. Even allowing that Windows 8 was designed from the ground up to sell Windows tablets, nearly all of that benefit was achieved by forcing OEM's to have Windows 8 default to the modern UI. There was essentially zero benefit from preventing users from changing it once they received their systems, especially since there is free third party software that does the job.

You just cannot explain Microsoft's policies in Windows 8 with logic. Their dedication to the modern UI is more of a religion at this point than a corporate policy.

I knew I was in trouble setting up my first Win8 system for a neighbor when I couldn't figure out how to shutdown. I had to google it and found I had to click down to four levels to find the shutdown button. Really?

Well as fate would have it, after several weeks, Win8 started freezing up in various places from bootup to start desktop. Ran hardware diags and thought maybe if I booted in to safe mode I could do a system restore in case my neighbor had corrupted something. Nope, couldn't do it. No more easily accessible safe mode. Seriously?

Had to call Dell (this is a Inspiron 660 desktop) only to be told they would have to send me a flash drive boot disk to perform a full recovery. My neighbor couldn't wait so Installed a second HD and installed Win7 on it. Working like a champ now. I am trying to convince her that we need to return it to Sams club for a full refund and order a new Dell Optiplex with Win7.

I really can't believe how bad Win8 is from a user's and technician's standpoint. I will no longer be recommending a Win8 system for anyone. I'll suggest they order a business system from one of the big manufacturers wiht Win7.

Upgraded three Win7 PCs (all different hardware and not clean installs to Win8) all running sweet with no issues and this is from last October so not a two week trial .

I would also say made a Restart and Shutdown shortcut in Win+X ,I also added them to Metro tiles but later removed Shutdown,Reboot Metro Tiles because not needed if you got them on Win+X menu,does not take long to right click in left corner and select Shutdown ie all of one second lol ....Win8 is very customizable which is great if you are willing to learn,plenty of easy guides like this one http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-shutdown-windows-8-in-just-one-click all OVER THE NET.

I feel like Win8 is getting some of the same unjustified FUD that Vista had.

Btw those that have installed Win7 then had issues how is that different?..I know for a fact my brother had a lot of issues installing Win7 Ultimate x64 two weeks ago(clean install) does that make the OS bad because certain users(regardless of OS in question) get issues?..hmm no,just bit of bad luck(We all know most times its either hardware,drivers or software that is the cause and not the OS itself).


One last point,when I was at school we never had computers,calculators were still new etc so everything I know about computers I learned myself,back in the DOS days things were a lot harder then nowadays thats for sure ,remapping memory for games, rearranging IRQs etc ..nowadays people are spoon fed but still find it hard?..makes me wonder sometimes if its the user rather then the OS,wonder how they will cope with Win9,10 etc makes me wonder.I can understand not liking any OS because of UI,layout etc..but don't tell me Win8 is hard to use because its not infact no Windows is.

Are you using the App or the "Skype for desktop"? I'm using Skype for desktop on both laptop and desktop. The app didn't like being run behind games and stuff like that. Skype just seems flakey on Win 8

To be fair I think third party button menu like Start8 etc are for those that can't use or adjust to Win8 as it is,for some people 18 years of doing something the sameway is hard for them to change,personally I'm more then happy with the Win+X menu,minor gripe would be they could of added Shut Down,Reboot to it as default,however easy to do yourself.

Then you have those that avoid Metro or refuse to customise it,personally I see it as just another tool that I can use when needed so have it customised to my liking,end of the day I use Win8 more or less how its supposed to be but customised to my needs like I have done on every OS I have used,Win9,10,11 will be no different for me.

That's great. Win8 works for the most part but the user interface is klugie and it's difficult to trouble shoot because they locked it down and moved everything around.

You have to realize that almost everyone has a PC these days but that does not mean they are technically oriented. Going from XP or Win7 to Win8 is like going from a 1980's car where the controls are mechanical to a 2013 where controls are electrical and computerized.

Vista sucks. I hate working on Vista systems. The FUD for Vista is justified. I think Win8 will beat it for the worst Win OS evar.

The Win8 failure I experienced may have been unique. It's not really the actual failure itself that I am complaining about. All Win OSs have some problems.

I am an IT professional whose primary responsibility is problem resolution on all platforms - PC, server, mainframe. I've been doing it since the early 80's. Most of what I know I learned myself. I have to look at things from a technical and user's perspective. Win8 does not look good in either area. People expect a big learning curve going from a dumb phone to a smart phone. It's new toy so they put a lot of time learning it. They should not have to do that with a PC that they have been using for years.

Oh, and you will not see Win8 as it is now on workplace desktops. MS will have to make major changes before businesses will start using it. Windows Blue, anyone?

There was really no good reason to eliminate the start button. It functioned very well and everyone was used to it. I didn't like it when they changed from start program menu expanded list to turnstile style in Vista but I got used to it. I still prefer the expanded list.

Blue/8.1 has some improvements but thats to be expected,Win8 is Microsoft first hybrid OS if you like so I expect them to improve on strengths and weakness of Win8 with their next generation of operating systems,no OS is perfect and they all have some flaws , I've used virtually all of them including many Linux Distro's.

I still think its not rocket science to use Win8 and pretty simple,sure you can argue some changes you don't like but thats always to be expected,nothing stays the same forever regardless of Linux or Microsoft.

I think the most important question is will Microsoft stay on a single hybrid OS for the future?..I believe they will so as always expect changes/improvements to the UI etc in their next gen.
