Holy Cow! Smarty Jones wins the preakness by 12 lengths

man oh man. That horse just demolished the field at pimlico.

Can he hold out for the long bellmont? Looks like it. that horse had plenty left and the field was running out. He just hit a few more gears and was just getting going down the stretch.

We'll see.

nice run.

-edit- forgot to mention that he's 8 for 8 at all lengths.

I am not really into horse racing, but I caught the race. Whatever horse was behind him nearly caught up, matter of fact he was gaining ground. Then Smarty kicked it in gear and just left the rest of the pack.

Great horse with a great story.

talking with the rider of "rock hard ten" (horse that placed..2nd) he said something along the lines of..

"I had a good stride going and kicked him up a gear and started gaining...and then smarty just layed on 4 more gears and was gone...unbelievible"

It was THAT impressive of a win.

yeah, thats the horse. Both the riders they interviewed said that Smarty was just unbeatable. I didnt know he was THAT good.

and hence the excitement of a triple crown winner. Haven't had a horse good enough to win all three, the really good ones win the Derby, Preakness and sputter at the 1 1/2 mile length at the Bellmont.

We'll see. I for one would love to see him go all the way.

from espn.com:

BALTIMORE -- Smarty Jones blazed into the lead turning for home and won the Preakness by a record 11½ lengths on Saturday, setting the stage for a dramatic Triple Crown try at the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

The undefeated colt has a chance to become just the 12th Triple Crown champion and the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed in 1978.

He would also claim another $5 million bonus and become racing's richest horse.

As he cruised past Lion Heart around the far turn, Smarty Jones turned on the afterburners and clobbered nine rivals in running his record to 8-for-8. In doing all that, he added another amazing chapter to racing's feel-good story of the year.

The crowd at Pimlico roared as jockey Stewart Elliott asked Smarty for his patented run for home. The Pennsylvania-bred responded by moving to the inside of pacesetter Lion Heart and pulling away. The margin of victory topped the record of 10 lengths by Survivor in 1873, in the first Preakness.

The overpowering win put in place some mind-boggling possibilities for the chestnut colt who has captured America's fancy -- as Funny Cide did last year before his Triple Crown bid fell short in the Belmont.

Smarty Jones will be the sixth horse in the last eight years with a Triple chance, but there's a big difference this time around: Smarty is the only one who hasn't lost.

whoever is into horse racing and got to see the close up replay notice his ears? never once pricked back during the race...thats in a way scarry in a way cause to me that means that horse had a TON left in him still.
I hope they do run him in the belmont and tell Elliot to go all out on the backside...I'd love to see another Secretairat like finish. This field today was visibly tired and not his greatest challenge though....with Zito and possibly Baffert back come belmont time its going to be just...wow...

that is what is so amazing. the horse just strode leasurily along and then turned it up a little down the stretch. He's got a lot more left.

Trainer chose not to work him since winning the derby. Looks like it payed off.

His odds at the bellmont are gonna be something like 2-5

I never enjoyed horse racing until I saw Seabiscuit. I admit, I'm one of the bandwagon jumpers that only watch things when they become popular but hey, better than not watching at all right? That movie gave a new me a newfound respect for horse racing.

yeah. But the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Bellmont Stakes are the pinnacle of the sport. like the stanley cup, world series, etc.

Even those who aren't into the game can enjoy the excitement and history associated with it.

cheers!

I don't particulary enjoy watching sports on a regular basis. But when it comes to the finals of nearly any sport I become an instant fan. I guess its the fact that something is on the line and I just don't have it in me to be a casual fan.
