They just quadrupled storage and octupled bandwidth... just look at my new account properties:

Used: 204 MB (1.0% - Overage $.10/MB)
1018 GB BW per Cycle (Grows 8 GB / week)
Used this Cycle: 15.5 GB (1.5% - Overage: $1/GB)

20 gigs storage and nearly a terabyte of transfers per month... for EIGHT freakin' bucks a month. WTF... how can they do that? That's got to be the best non-free hosting deal in existence... anyone beat that for the price, out of curiosity? Man.

Transfers take hardly any CPU time... I'm pretty sure I could use it all up with some large video files if I removed my .htaccess files.
 
In the past, every host that has gone the route of way cheap with huge amounts of resources has ended up failing after gradually declining quality. I can't see how Dreamhost can keep this up and continue to be successful.

Overselling. They don't actually have that much bandwidth to give away- they're just selling it on the hope that people won't get curious and try to use it all.
 
With CPU time limits you will only get to use 150-200GB at most per month assuming it's nothing but large files from what someone else had calculated.
 
I've no idea how they can stay in business. My year is running out soon. Anyone have a suggestion for a better place to host? 1/2 a gig and a couple dozen G of bandwidth should be more than enough.
 
ugh a site i'm helping admin is hosted w/ Dreamhost....and it's been down for the past 15 minutes. i happened to stop by ATOT and find this thread 😛

i'm no expert in web hosting, but i've been using moreweb.com (same company that hosts anandtech) and i've had absolutely no problems with them at all. fantastic service to boot.
