How a 23 year old college male that eats right and works out everyday gets pertussis is beyond me, but yeah it happened, and the pharmacy was out of the prescription syrup my doc wrote me for but the pharmacist recommended I give Delsym a shot. HOLY COW! The only way to describe the feeling is like being 8 beers deep for 12 hours straight.

Cliffs: Orange bottle with a hell of a kick

edit: I should have mentioned I am going right by the box and not taking doses any larger or any sooner than recommended

It really gives that kind of feeling with the recommended dose? Surprised it's not hyped more by OTC druggies then. :D

A normal dose of Delsym has literally no noticable effect on me ... doesn't even do much if I have a cough unless I take an antihistimine with it.

I'm certain I was, as its the P of DTP and my mother always goes overboard on these things. The only thing i can think of is that I was due for a booster, as the pertussis vaccine isn't known for being the longest lasting. Also, its not a 100% deal, and being thats its not a live attenuated (I don't believe it is) vaccine it may not have triggered enough of an immune response to "stick".

No, i can promise you I didn't take more than 2 teaspoons spaced about 12 hours. It's a midnight and noon cycle for the time being.Different medications effect different people in different ways. Is it really all too huge of a stretch to think that a 150 pound (soaking wet) man could get messed up on a strong dose of cough medicine with an empty stomach?

Yeah, you are probably just susceptible to it. Like, acetaminophen has no effect on pain and caffeine doesn't wake me up. People are weird like that.

I'm 137 lbs and I'm not effected by it at all... I used to go to class after taking delsym to supress my coughs, had no effect on me...

It's either what you said or you're taking a lot more than you should...

Aleve(naproxen) on the other hand makes me feel really messed up. I take one capsule, and I'm totally dazed for the duration of the drug. So I'm sticking to acentaminophen...

Now that i think of it, CNS agents have been pretty harsh to me. A Diet soda's worth of caffeine is enough to make me jittery and codeine and its derivatives make me insanely hyper (weird huh?)

Yea, pretty much all of them. Some have guifensen too to water down the phelem, but those are the only ingredients in most cough medicines that are OTC.

And I don't think this is zanejohnson's sort of thing. DXM is a stimulant and dissociative that makes you have trips (that are considered unenjoyable) in high doses.

I would have gone to another pharmacy. I just got my script for permathazine/codeine filled. It put me to sleep like a baby last night. Amazing.

In fact most do, however its the only one I've ever seen that has it alone as its only active ingredient ... most others contain an antihistimine and/or a decongestant plus somtimes an expectorant as well.

Yeah, I just found some nightime nyquil fake brand stuff that contains that plus the docalmxine succinate (sp?) - i'll take a few doses and see how it feels.

Then you're not reading the labels at all.............ever hear of Robitussin DM? Nothing but dextromethorphan and guaifenesin as its active ingredients. Then there is just plain old Robitussin......only has dextromethorphan as its only active ingredient.

There are any number of cough preps on the market that are just like that.......but due to marketing and a lot of people's desire for an all-in-one fix, the multisymptom cough preps are stocked much heavier. You just have to LOOK for the simpler preparations, but I assure you they are there.

Eh, on rereading the thread I realized that I mistook this for some other high school kid who just swallowed a full bottle of something and thought it made him cool. My mistake.;)
