the biggest shaking I ever felt was a 3.1 centered about 150 feet from our house In Danville about 20 years ago. Its all about proximity.

This is a predominantly Southern California phenomenon. I've been trying to get my husband to break this habit since we moved up here.
 
i felt it. at first i thought it was just some fatass walking outside the room, then i realized it was an earthquake. it as about 27 miles from where i was. 4.3 apparently. my wife in oakland didn't feel anything. and before you all continue, i rock her world. every single time

Those of us who grew up here call it simply "Highway 17".
