Holidays just don't "do it" for me anymore.

I sit here, on Christmas, and think to myself big whoop another damn holiday. Ever since my parents and grandparents died (between the ages of 15-21) and I have gotten older I seem to care less and less about any holiday that comes. I used to care and couldn't wait for the day. Im married with 2 wonderful boys, my wife gets all excied and has a hard time going to sleep and wakes up early on all holidays and birthdays but for me it would not bother me in the least for some reason if they just let me sleep.

Am I the only one that feels this way or is this a normal thing as you get older? For guys anyway.

I don't get excited like when I was a kid, but I do enjoy spending a little time with the family I have left during the holidays.

After being in the Navy for 8 years (now a civilian for five months and 4 days), every holiday is just another day where every fvcking store is closed. So I don't care much for the holidays anymore. Although it is nice to see other people enjoy them, and I wouldn't ever ruin it for them.

Hence the reason I took someone else's 12 hour shift today--now they get to be with their family today, and I don't mind all that much...

Another bitter person.... Hope you don't plan on making a career out of the navy.. Sell everything you own and move to the bahamas.

 Actually, I'm out of the Navy, and I'm not bitter at all. I work in dispatch, and I took someone else's 12 hour shift here. One of the officers brought in some homemade enchiladas and tamales for me and the dispatcher that relieves me. So it isn't all that bad.

EDIT: When I lived on the boat, it was annoying as hell, because it was a day that I had off of work, but nothing was open, so it was kinda pointless. And I rarely got to go see friends and family, so holidays just don't mean that much to me, especially compared to other people.

I haven't been home for a christmas or birthday in years. So... you do the math.

Last birthday at home was in 2002. Last Christmas at home was 2003. Ouch.

I don't care about getting gifts like I did when I was a kid. Now I care about giving gifts, seeing the expression in the kids eyes, and just enjoying the season.

Stop being so selfish. Think of your son's hapiness instead of your own. They'll be grown and gone before you know it.

Me too.

I'm 41 with two small kids, so I am getting to relive some of those special memories through them.
It was a total blast to see them come down the stairs this morning to see what Santa brought them.

Good times, good times.

Stop being so selfish. Think of your son's happiness instead of your own. They'll be grown and gone before you know it.

I don't think I'm being selfish in the least, in fact we just got back from me and the boys going to the theater to watch Happy Feet. Just though thinking back when I was younger and hand family members I was all excited, couldn't go to sleep, couldn't wait for the day, now I'm just MEH with my parents being dead and my only two brothers left of our family living so far away.

I am happy for my boys, and I don't let them see the way I feel. I put a smile on my face and make sure they are happy just inside I'm not feeling it anymore like I used to and I miss it, wish I had it back.

Having my husband and son here made the day totally for me.Seeing my son's reaction to his gifts was soo cool.Playing with the xmas kitten made for a lot of laughs. My husband put a lot of work into making the day warm and special. The meals he served up were top motch!

Sitting here now, candles and tree ablaze, the yule log burning, soft music playing, very content :)
