I've been getting along perfectly fine with Win8 on multiple devices. I do still need to update my HTPC to 8.1, but I'm happy on my Surface Pro and have been using 8/8.1 since release on my main PC.
What Microsoft HAS been terrible about - making all the tricks and short-cuts well known. I KNOW I am not using even a quarter of the best time-savers, but even simple things like Win-I, right-clicking on the start button, etc, once you get used to them, Windows really doesn't feel that much different. It's better in every way than it was before, but now, there's a new shell interface which uses code which is device-and-class agnostic and allows for parity across platforms, in a way that is sure to expand.
Hopefully, hopefully, Microsoft does a treat and helps bridge Xbox One and Win8 apps (supposedly just about the same code (WinRT?), with some subtle differences). And there have been rumors about bridging Windows RT (tablet devices) and Windows Phone 8. Frankly, they need to hurry up with that. I'd still vastly prefer a standalone Windows Phone/WinRT/hybrid media player. I live Zune, and always enjoyed Zune, and am still giving them my money for the Xbox Music service. I still get my 10 DRM-free song credits every month too, which is awesome.
