Genetics, not beer, causes beer bellies
Beer Does Not Cause
Pot Belly, Experts Claim
Published: 06 Jul 2009

BEER does NOT cause pot bellies, experts claim after a study.

They said heavy drinkers DO put on weight - but it tends to be spread over their bodies.

Pot bellies, for generations associated with ale-swillers propping up the bar, may have more to do with genetics.

The study also discovered that the men most likely to put on weight were those who drunk the most - or, surprisingly, those who did not drink at all.
Moderate drinkers fared best in the research by German and Swedish experts.

They studied 20,000 people for more than eight years and published findings in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dunlap Disease. My belly dun lapped over my jeans.
It's a jean (gene) issue. My belly hangs over my jeans.

(That's all I remember)

It's true that how your body deposits fat is largely genetic. Women store different than men. And even within their own gender people tend to start depositing in one place faster than others. This is more the case with women than men. Some women start sending every excess calorie right to their ass, others it's in their thighs. Others it's around their love handles.

Men almost always tend to start collecting around the midsection. Which leads to the "pot belly". The link appears to be dead so I can't tell if they hit on it or not, but there is pretty substansial evidence out there that your body handles calories from alcohol much different than other forms of energy. It really slows down your bodies ability to metabolize fat. Alcohol itself won't do it for many people, but when added with other unhealthy eating habits it's a very bad combination.

I carried around a "Beer Belly" for 25 yrs. (Though I don't even drink!), finally cut back on my Bread and other starches and it disappeared rather quickly.
I was the type who had to have bread with every meal, even to the point that sometimes I ate ONLY bread for Dinner quite often!

Duh? Kind of like how you can't get rid of a big belly by doing ab workouts. You can't target fat loss, and you can't control where fat will be put on either.

yes, i believe genetics has a lot to do with it, take for instance filipinos (i'm half), they're flat chested and big bellied. gender does not apply.

I never thought that phrase was meant to be literal...

The only truth it has is yes, going to a bar and drinking 3-4 beers every night can make you gain weight just like eating a lot of any bad food can make you gain weight.

Its not like there is some secret ingredient in beer that makes it go straight to your belly. Who the hell thought that?

Ummm...alcohol does affect how your body can metabolize fat.

My roommate drinks more beer every night than is required to kill large animals and he's very cut and lean. I don't know how he does it.

I drink quite a lot too, but back it up with fairly good eating and lifting weights/running.

Well, I know he doesn't eat well. His binge drinking nights where there's 2 empty 18 pack boxes on the floor in the kitchen, he won't eat anyting at all. He does climb about six 280-foot ladders every day though. Maybe that's the key :p

my old roommate lived on a diet filled with nothing but mountain dew, reece's pieces, hotpockets, and grilled cheese sandwiches.

he was rail thin all through his early/mid 20's, then he hit 27-28 and blew up like a balloon.

Fast metabolism is great until you get older and it catches up with you. :( I was like that most of my life. I could eat a spoon of sugar for breakfast and go all day. Weighed about 140-150 through high school and into my twenties. Hit 30 and turned into a plumper.

the human metabolism is a wondrous thing

my brother does the same diet and he's starting to build some nice midsection fat now that his early 30s are here
