Hobbies or stuff to do for guys

I have been spending a lot of time alone at home lately and although the WoW players might not agree, it is extremely annoying and I get quite a bit lonely. I do play Everquest 2 but on a heavy week I might play an hour a night.

So I guess I am looking for suggestions on what people do here to get them out of the house (or just in-house hobbies). I am moving into a new house next week so money is tight meaning no pricey hobbies.

I've thought of something like taking some martial art classes but there are few good schools around here the majority just being 'You give money, you get belt' but I might look in deeper to find a respectable 2-3 nights a week class. Besides this though, I really have to say I've no idea, I could probably convince my buddy to join a gym with with me but our schedules vary so it might not work very well. I usually jog 3-5 times a week but that takes maybe all of 30 minutes unless I do the trail multiple times and I am not in good enough shape to run it twice.

So basically, I am here asking for advice, what do you folks do for a hobby or to pass your evenings that does not involve the computer or the TV? Ideally, I would like to have a schedule setup where I know in advance what I will be doing with my time so I can actually look forward to leaving work instead of dreading what risks being another evening alone at home.

Oh, and before someone jumps in and says 'get a woman', I am taking a bit of a break from dating and am not ready emotionally to jump in another relationship. That is why I'm posting this actually, I went from spending 5-6 days a week with a woman to being alone and it is extremely hard on me.

So, anyone want to share what they do with their time?

I have softball games on Wed. Bowling on Thursday and play tennis on Monday, Tuesday and sometimes Friday (if there's nothing to do).

Depends if you're looking for a hobbie that is good exercise also. If so join a recreational sports league, or like you said take martial arts or join a gym.

Other ideas that are non-active: Take some classes at the local community college that interest you, like cooking, wine tasting or find some place that'll teach you how to make beer!

passionate about any old cars? I find old VW bugs/busses fix them up, and sell them at a reasonable price. its fun work because of the differences that detailing can do, its something to do, and you can make a profit on it.

How about paintball? You can pick up a cheap used marker (Tippmann 98 or something) for under $100 and it's a lot of fun and get's you outside and doing some physical activity.

well, on a tight budget, its gonna be hard. pretty much everything costs money, at least initially.

target shooting = guns + ammo + range = expensive
photography = camera and lenses = expensive
instruments = expensive
cars = expensive unless you're just looking
learning a martial art usually isn't cheap. lowest i've seen for a lesson is $80 per lesson and usually its not a very long lesson, maybe an hour.
astronomy is expensive if you want something decent. eyepieces are like camera lenses, they can get expensive for the good stuff.

Sports. Any sports. All sports. Pick what you like and go out and play. It doesn't even need to be a strenuous sport. Join a mixed bowling league or a softball league. Go to the park and shoot hoops. Take up golf. If you want something more athletic play tennis or racketball. You'll get in shape and meet people with similar interests.

Socially the best things are co-ed leagues of easy sports like softball or bowling. You go out and play the game, then generally the whole team will head out for beers and wings.

Thanks for the suggestions up to now. I'm 26 by the way.

I've thought of such things as volunteering, getting another job, going to take some courses but I would rather have something that is not also a responsibility.

Photography I might like, but it would cost hundreds to begin.

Sports I am not too much into, I play golf only now. Cycling could work but there is a lack of trails here so it would mean jogging and cycling the same trail. Although I could always join the university sports complex, it would include the entire facility.

Music, I wouldn't mind that, would take a lot of practice too.

Any other ideas? And thanks to those who posted up to now, happy to see it's all very usefull answers.

Btw, for bowling and softball, bowling we only have candlepin and no big ball so it's not much fun and softball season is ending in a month.

Some very good ideas, paintball is too pricey for me and no games weeknights. I see some I could look into, I was hoping for some far out 'Why have I never thought of that!' ideas, but I guess there aren't too many of those around.

I am going to sit down tonight and write down what people suggested here and see about cost and making a schedule. I can afford perhaps 100$ a month for some time so I am heavily restricted. I figure I could probably find a gym membership and either a class or martial art for this price.

Well, if you want to stretch it out over a few months or throw a little more money at it you could build your own projector. I recently picked up a copy of Popular Science at a bookstore and found their article on how to build your own projector.

They link to a kit here:

http://lumenlab.com/

and list a few other steps and even a parts list (including cost).

Other than that I would suggest going down to a bookstore (preferably a larger chain like BAM, Bordes, etc.) and browse through the DIY section of the magazines. Popular Science looks like they have a couple of projects you could do yourself in this issue. Since this is the first time I have ever bought a copy I don't know if it's the same for each issue.
