They gave him an extension to clean things up, so no jail time for him. All the scrap they cleared that day only brought in $3000.

Anybody remember the thread from some other forum where a guy posted tons of pictures of his moms house? I think she bought most of the stuff on ebay and would just stack it everywhere in her house, not even opening the boxes. It has to be 5 years old or so.

I have the pack rat gene. But when I start cleaning up, I don't feel bad chucking vast amounts of crap.

..I did that on my HDs recently. I dropped to a total of 45.5GB used. That includes the OS, programs, music, videos converted for the PSP/DS, caches (which I tend to set rather high) and the page file.

I never get tired of reading through that whole thing. Weirdest part, the mother looks completely normal.

We throw anything out that hasn't been used within the last year or two almost without any exception. As such the possessions we have are in known locations and we're not full of a lot of useless crap.

I barely have any shit and I still feel like there's too much clutter, useless stuff. I can't imagine hoarding.

Definitely a serious problem with some people! A lot of it made me laugh though in this thread. Good stuff.

Closest thing to hoarding I've seen is generally atrocious garages, there is one a street over from me and this summer i was walking and saw somebody's garage opened. It was floor to ceiling completely boxes (no, not moving boxes), and so crowded that bottles of cleaner were up against the boxes just inside enough to close the door. Slobs.

much better FRESH anyways, idk why you'd want to freeze stuff like meat or cheese.

Yes everyone lives <5 miles from a grocery store and goes shopping every 3 days. Be realistic. WHy have freezers at all then? Who needs ice just buy the drink cold and drink it fast am i rite.

I was a hoarder....then I adopted the three second rule...

If I can't find a use for something in three seconds, it's trashed, lol.

My Grandma was a pretty bad hoarder/"collector." She collected these plates, porcelain figures, and other "collectible" junk like that. My mom has been going through some boxes of her old stuff and the sad thing is that there are some really nice family heirlooms mixed in with the collectible junk. She got inspired from a show called "Clean Sweep" so now she's on a mission to get rid of stuff.

I would say that I hoard computer files. For example, I have all my e-mails going back to about 1994.

I'm definitely not a hoarder but I do wish I had hoarded more of my data over the years. Would be fascinating. I'm never throwing away any files, programs or websites that I personally create again, unless they're trivial. I'm about to buy 2x1TB drives so storage will be no problem.

Edit - and I'm not talking about hoarding crap like TV episodes and music. If I don't watch/listen to a media file anymore then I delete it. But it would be awesome if I still had the website I created when I was 12 (N94/PS wrestling game news, a good 400 hits per day on my 5mb ISP hosting) or my emails from when I was a greasy kid.

It will be strange in 20 years with my gmail account. I basically don't delete my email because I don't need to. It's not stored on my computer and it doesn't get in the way, but it still exists if I ever wanted to look back at it.

This show made me freak out and start throwing stuff away even though I'm nowhere near a hoarder.

First, your AV is super awesome.

Second, that was a nasty case. It seems most of the people hoard stuff they think is important, this lady had at least 6,000lbs of pure garbage piled up.

I have the exact opposite mental condition so for me watching that show is very painful.

One of my favorite sounds is a garbage compactor crushing stuff and for me X-mas is like celebrating Armageddon, not only because I'm an atheist, but because of the sickening mass consumerism. If my house ever burned down, the only 2 words you would hear from me is "Oh well".

I'm nothing compared to a true hoarder, but I don't like to throw things out or get rid of things that might have practical usefulness later, particularly for fixing things.

My wife would ask me 'Why are you going to keep that?' I'd tell her "I like to have solutions before I have problems." And with all of the things I've pulled out of my @ss to solve situations that she's been shocked and impressed by, she's convinced and doesn't even bother me about it anymore. :)

i used to do that, but i finally just asked myself. "look self, that crap has been sitting on that shelf for 4 fucking years. you havent used it, you forget its there until you look at it, you will never use it. toss it!"

so i did and i can actually use my work bench now.

I handle this issue pretty easy.. own as least amount of things as you can that would ever need fixing :p
