The only one that looks bad is the one that's actually on the bumper.

Have you even lived in a neighborhood with an HOA? What the law says and what they say rarely agree, but they are in their full right to send you as many letters and fines as they want.

Of course, you don't have to pay them. And sure, you could take them to court and perhaps win. The question is whether you want to spend that kind of time/money to fight them for a couple of stickers, or comply.

That's the reality of HOAs. Sure, state law might give you the freedom to park a rusted broken-down truck on your lawn. But HOAs make sure a bad neighbor does't turn your neighborhood into a trailer park.

What's not fine is that these imbeciles insist on OVERDOING IT.

Seven bumper stickers plastered all over your car? Tacky.

A 5x3 foot flag in your employer's shared office space? Tacky.

Having 15 people over for weekly Bible study creating parking issues? Tacky.

it's not your property. why do you care?

I don't understand how HOA's can have this kind of power. Disgusting.

Why people want to pay 30 years for a home that others can mandate how you live in it , what color its painted, and what you do outdoors, I will never know.

Just rent if you are going to live like that.

this is my thought as well. i will never ever live in a HOA.

Some HOAs are good, some HOAs are terrible, freedom, freedom, busybodies, my neighbor's lawn is 8" high and he painted his house Miami Dolphins colors, I can do whatever I want with my property, I happen to like the Miami Dolphins, I'd never live in a cookie cutter neighborhood with tiny lots, your lawn is poisoning my drinking water, your lawn has crabgrass, you wouldn't like it if some hillbilly parked his monster truck on the street, towns and counties regulate the appearance of your property too, <William Wallace>FREEDOM!</William Wallace>, my neighbor spent $100k in legal fees because the HOA wouldn't let him walk his dog without a leash, DO WE HAVE TO HAVE THIS SAME DISCUSSION EVERY TIME THERE IS A THREAD ABOUT AN HOA?

HOA don't insure you have a nice neighborhood. They insure that you have the neighborhood that the HOA wants you to have. The majority of the population has no problem with neighbors because we do things like talk to our neighbors, make friends. Not hold up inside our homes, never speaking to who lives next door and whining to a HOA when someone drops a gum wrapper in the yard.

City laws are more than enough to cover 90% of the problems that the HOA claims to address. HOA started as a selling gimmick , the same way gated communities promised no crime.

I wonder if people know that the HOA cannot make any rule that violates rights or laws and many HOA do.

the guy lives in a condo -- the HOA is necessary to take care of the roof and exterior of the building at the least.

Something that bothers me about this is it took them 8 YEARS to send him a letter about this...If it was originally in the rules, why did it take them so long to notify him about their problems with it? He's probably been retired for about 25 years, so I doubt that he just put those stickers on his car. Why did they decide to pick on him, anyways? The article says, "FOX 4 cameras spotted bumper stickers for political parties, health causes, and other non-commercial interests on the property as well."

Well considering one of the HOA board members never even heard of this letter. I wouldnt be surprised if one of the HOA board members who dislike the stickers tried to scare him into getting rid of the stickers without going through proper channels. In other words one person sent out the letter on the HOA letterhead without the other knowing about it hoping he would just comply.

An HOA is a private state though, doesn't have to be constitutional nor is anyone required to move into one.

Just a hint guys...an HOA is designed to bring "like-minded" people together to live. The flip side is having someone put up a chicken farm or freaking goats / pigs next door.

That is what city zoning laws are for.
The rest of us outside the HOA police state understand that.

Liberty is all about the right to be tacky if you want. Some might think that foaming at the mouth rants in political forums are tacky but you have every right to engage in them if you so desire. As long as the bumper stickers on his vehicle do not violate state law they are really none of your or the HOA's business.

This. I agree that some of those things are tacky, but they're none of the HOA's business.

You don't understand why HOA's came to be, do you?
