Hmmm...should I get Rock Band? or GHWT?

Yeah, I know I'm way behind the times here...

I took advantage of that Gamestop Gamer's Day sale and got two copies of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for $9.99 each and two free X-Plorer guitars. I've sold one copy of GH:A via Craigslist for $15.

Now I know the content on GH:A is limited in comparison to a GHWT or Rock Band 2 so I'm looking to pick up a copy of either one without the instruments. I'm almost tempted to sell the other copy of GH:A to be honest. I'll probably pick up a microphone and drumset used from somewhere as cheap as possible down the road later depending on how well we enjoy the game.

This is going to end up being a birthday gift for my son because he's been asking for Rock Band or Guitar Hero for a while. I didn't even realize he knew what those games were the first time he asked for one.

So, GHWT or Rock Band 2?

I'm not really "in the know" with either (I have GH3) but everything I've heard/read says the Rock Band games are much better.

Well, Rock Band 2 is definitely more popular than GHWT on eBay. RB2 is selling at higher prices.

The Rock Band platform is far superior to the Guitar Hero platform in every way, shape and form. Guitar Hero has been all downhill since Activision acquired it before GH3 came out.

Just an example:

You buy a song in Rock Band 1, it's good forever in the Rock Band series.

You buy a song in GH:WT? LOL, sorry! That DLC is not compatible with GH3, GH: A GH: M or any other GH game!

The gameplay engine in Rock Band is also far superior.

Harmonix actually cares about their games and wants to release quality products. Activision/RedOctane are just in it for the money grab.

I think this is from all the deals on GHWT recently. The bundles have been heavily discounted. I personally like GH better than rockband, mainly because my first guitar game i played was GH3.

Ahh...see, if your first GH game was GH1 or GH2, then you would realize how far the series has fallen since Activision took over. 🙂

I thought the big change is that Harmonix made GH1 and GH2 and from then on Neversoft has made them while Harmonix now makes th RB games?

Voted RB2, you could also look into selling one of the copy's of GH:A and put the proceeds towards RB1 and then import the playlist over.

I believe GH:WT has around 300 songs including the 86 in the game and 200+ downloadable/purchasable. Seems like a lot, but RB2 has well over 600. There's just a lot more to choose from in Rock Band.

Do you have any idea which one has the most songs that he'd like? Also, I'm pretty sure that even though it'd be a gift for him, that you and/or your wife would probably get some time on it as well. You may want to have a peek at the set list to see if one is far more interesting and maybe convince him 😉. Also, if you can say... buy the RB2 set and find a great deal on just the GHWT game, maybe you could buy him the set and buy GHWT for yourself. They both work together just fine.

Also, one thing you may like about GHWT that I like is the fact that people can make songs on it and upload them.... They always name them differently from what you'd expect (as in if it's FF7's Still More Fighting, they may call it "I'm Still Fighting" or something like that). Heck, you can even download the opening theme to Zero Punctuation .

As other have said, Rock Band is better. But, if you want, just get RB1 used for cheap and play that for a while. All your downloaded content will be compatible if you eventually upgrade to RB2, plus you can import your RB1 disc into RB2 (except for 3 songs).

Rock Band 1. Get it on the cheap. When you get through that, go to Rock Band 2 and import the songs. By that time, it will be cheaper, I'm sure.

I actually liked the Rock Band 1 song list a little better anyways, the first time I played RB2 it seemed like it was all 80's rock.
Getting 1 and buying more songs actually isn't that bad an idea, the real good stuff is the DLC anyways.

Found a copy of RB2 with a mic on eBay. Currently $27.77 with an hour and twenty minutes left. Going to shoot for that. If not, I'll give Rock Band a shot as there is a used copy on Amazon for sell for ~$16 shipped.

Except RB2 makes you play the same song a bazillion times. I hate that. I like both, but to say one is better in every way is ignorant.

rock band becuase u can get all the rb1 tracks for $5 then your music collection is huge.

With instruments?! Or do you not want drums?

I saw Gamestop is offering the entire RB1 SE set for $99 brand new.

I already got two guitars for basically $5 after the sale of a copy of GH:Aerosmith. Like I said in my OP, I'll see how we like the game and then find a deal on drums if we like the game.

I balked on the eBay deal. The seller only had an 8 rating and had only 1 sell in the last 6 months. I may have been too cautious but that's usually a bad sign. Don't want to get ripped off.

How do you do that?

I missed that. Yeah, how do you get all the RB1 tracks for $5?

I ended up ordering a used copy of RB1 off of Amazon for $16 and change. Might as well start cheap.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

If you have RB2, and a RB1 disc, you can rip the RB1 songs off the disc onto your HDD for $5 and play them within RB2.

And yeah, as others have said, rock band all the way.

I've played every GH, and every RB, and theres simply no comparison. The RB instruments are better (more realistic), the presentation in RB is miles ahead, and theres so much more to do in RB2 than GH:WT.

The only thing GH:WT has over it is the music creator, but its a rather silly feature that most will never care for. The stock GH drums are slightly better due to cymbals, but the RB2 with the addon cymbals completely blows it out of the water.

I've had rock band for years now, and I still play it regularly.
