Is there a good quiet HSF unit for under $30? This is for a athy 1.2...that might get OC-ed to 1.3-1.5...?

I realize the thermalright sk6 is a good unit...but $40 is a bit much for my rather small budget

edit: i had thermaltake sk6...what a joke! thermalright! im dumb...lol

Check the For Sale/Trade forum. You may get lucky but generally you get what you pay for.

Well, maybe!

I think molex got some silent coolers, which is not that expensive. And I know that NoiseControl in Germany has some, but I think that they are expensive in the US. I have just bought NoiseControls Silverado, and it is so quiet 12dB (you can't hear it). Look at www.noisecontrol.de to see If it fits you. Happy hunting

ok...at this site, they review several hsf units

Sharky's Extreme recommended the Thermosonic Thermalengine HSF unit, which that above site also seemed to like.

That site also liked the GlobalWin line of products- FOP 32-1 (the AMD site rates this at 1.4ghz; could go higher, as AMD's site doesnt list anything past what they manufacture).

The Vantec FCE-6254OD also came highly rated.

And Pay recommended the Taisol CGK742092, which also looks quite nice.

All these fall within my budget...does anyone have an opinion as to which is best? (i was thinking either that thermalengine or maybe one of the globalwins...but i dont really know)

thanks,
-eric

thermaltage Volcano II, thats what I am getting for my 1.2 ghz. Its really quiet and is an above average performer, I don't thinks its what you need for a heafty overclock. thermaltake rates it to 1.5 ghz but the highest AMD has approved is 1.33 ghz

I've tried Thermaltake Copper Orb ($10~$15 on ebay) and Vantec FCE6254 from Sidewindercomputers.com ($22 inc. shipping)

On my Athlon 1.3, Vantec is 10 degrees cooler than the Copper Orb on my rig. I tried out the Copper Orb just out of curiosity and because Vantec was really getting on my nerves because of its noise.

If you are OC'ing and don't mind fan noise (it is loud), I would recommend Vantec's 6254.

Ive used the Taisol cgk 74 series for some time now on my duron 600 OCed to 1008. It runs real cool. and the fans are easily upgradable in the future. the clips are by far the best around utilizing all 6 nubs on the socket.

alrighty :)

seems as if im gonna choose between thermoSonic ThermoEngine unit...or the Taisol piece. Both have recieved good reviews, and provide solid cooling. And should I choose...mountin a big 7k suckah on either provides top-notch performance...tho i couldnt live with that noise (which is why vantec is out of the runnin)

thanks guys,

In my opinion, the Global Win WBK38 w/ a 80 mm fan is you best option. You'll get World class cooling and it will be very quiet. also won't cost an arm and a leg.

in case your wondering, getting the 80 mm fan on the WBK requires nothing special. you can use the clips that global win provides and it will just click right on the 80 mm fan. also the hs is 60 mm by 80 mm so the 80 mm fan fits pretty well.

I mean, a quiet 80 mm...is easy to get lol...like 40CFM@32-34db

I suggest you go get the new radiate program off overclockers.com, and see for yourself what works and what doesn't
If you plan on overclocking, plan on spending the money. Generic and Anemic coolers just don't cut it at 1ghz+. With AMD's thermal loads approaching (and surpassing) 100 watts, if you can to hit those high speeds, you will end up spending the money on a GOOD HS/fan combo.
Also, anyone who thinks that 55-60c is a safepoint for AMD processors, should take a look here http://www.overclockers.com/articles430
