umm, do you even know what pci express is? they are just saying that to justify a move to pci express.

what about things like 64 bit processors, sli, raid, dual channel memory, dual core, agp, dvd burners, etc... they are saying pci express is more impressive that those?

The greatest thing in PC history was the move from the regular 486 to the Pentium 586... That chip was such a gigantic leap in performance that it left AMD behind. If you sit and think about it, that is where Intel began the gigantic lead over AMD... Before that, they were pretty even keel.

Just my opinion... But there have been a lot of significant things, such as somene mentioned the addition of hardware 3d.

uhh u mentioned sli over pci express....u do realize u need the latter for the first one?

Umm, do you even know what ATi is referring to? Making parts faster, or even changing their design, isn't anything to do with "PC architecture". I'd say PCI-Express's biggest challenger would be SATA, or maybe something like USB, though that's starting to age. Dual channel memory is also a decent one. And I'm not sure if dual core processors fits under PC architecture, plus that's not really as revolutionary as it is evolutionary.

PCI-Express is huge because it can totally eliminate the other slot types, and has lots of speed to scale with. Something like that is incomparable to regular part upgrade.

bah, the pentium 60 and 66 were overheating monsters of a processor that AMD could keep up with using 486s clocked at 90 or 100 mhz. intel prematurely killed the 486 in order to brand processors. no, the far more significant processor was the oft-overlooked pentium pro, which spawned the pentium 2, the pentium iii, the first few celerons (including the legendary 300A), pentium-m, and the desktop chips that will replace the 786-netburst architecture. AMD had no real answer to that architecture until the athlon came out years later.
