according to this site xbox site the cpu in the xbox is just a lousy mobile celeron, not even a p3... Maybe Intel offered a 733MHz celeron part to M$ for the same price as the p3 600 they were supposed to have... Now we know why it just says 733MHz Intel processor on their spec sheets... 733MHz look better on a sheet than 600, even if it's not any faster.

From what I've heard the chip is a Celeron chip, but its running at a 133Mhz FSB, so while it is "crippled" in a way because it only has 128KB L1 cache, it does run at a higher FSB which would put Celeron performance much closer to a full fledged PIII (sortof like if you look at PII 450 at 100Mhz FSB performance versus the Celeron A 300 overclocked to 450 at 100Mhz FSB ... The differences were much more minimal than they are today) ... Celeron's biggest performance problem today is that it runs at a 66Mhz FSB still.

Yeah, but, the Celeron II's (even at 100MHz FSB) had a n-way cache different from PIII as well. So, is this is a mutant Celeron or a Mutant PIII (PIII w/ less cache on board)? Not like it makes any difference if you are looking to buy, it'll just be nice to know.

Yes, I heard it has 128K of L2 cache, instead of the regular 256K found on normal PIII's. Since its running on a 133MHz FSB like a P3, but only has 128K of cache, Intel could have called it a "special Pentium III" or a "special edition, enhanced Celeron", since it has trais of each of these CPU lines. Now, given the choice between those two, which looks better? The "special Pentium III", right? Most people dont think "Celeron" when they are thinking about their ideal gaming CPU. So, MS and Intel are calling it a "special" Pentium III.

<< Hah! How much effect does the cache have on gaming anyway? >>

If you want to see how it affects gaming, look at some old reviews using Athlons 'B's and Durons. Its the best way to compare that I know

nah I think looking at benches of celeron 800's vs p3 800's(100MHz psb) would be alot better than looking at a duron/classic athlon benches witch are almost equal...

The celeron also differs fromt eh P3 in the speed and efficiency of the cache. I'm not 100% sure on the numbers, but I think the P3 has a 256 bit bus w/ 16 way associative while the celeron only has 64 bits w/ 4 way associative.

Nope.

Pentium III Coppermine: 8-way set associative, 256-bit wide bus.
Celeron Coppermine 128: 4-way set associative, 256-bit wide bus.

At this point I have no idea if the XBOX processor is 8-way or 4-way set associative.
