HL2 with a 3500+ but a petty radeon 850064mb?

There's a thread about how HL2 looks on a Radeon 7000. Take a look at those screenshots. Your system will do better.
 
It runs pretty well even with my rig, though my card is higher than a 8500, I expected much lower, and the graphics are just spectacular.
