There's a thread about how HL2 looks on a Radeon 7000. Take a look at those screenshots. Your system will do better.

Someone showed screens of a Radeon 7000 64 mb running at 22 fps. I forget what resolution.

It runs pretty well even with my rig, though my card is higher than a 8500, I expected much lower, and the graphics are just spectacular.
