HL2: Which version to purchase?

Which version did you buy, are you happy with it? Were the extra games good/bad/worth the extra money?

I was thinking of going gold, but would like to get a few opinions.

I got the Standard (the one that comes with the ATI 9800 bundle). I can't see why I would possibly want HL:Source; you don't really need a strategy guide for HL2, if you have trouble beating it, ask for help here; as for the little secrets, its more fun figuring it out on your own.

The only thing I would actually want is DoD:Source.

It's really your choice. It's not like buying hardware; you're getting the exact same stuff from the exact same company.

I got the silver. I don't really care about the extra stuff, especially since I wouldn't wear an HL2 hat in public anyways. 🙂

The bronze is too basic when for only $10 more, you get tons of games.

silver version through steam is quite a good value. if you have a dvd burner, you can back up HL2 and CSS to a DVD so then you can own the product physically. i can't wait for day of defeat: source. that's only reason i bought silver.

Can't you make DVD backups of everything available on Steam?

Yep. You just tell Steam to make a backup and it will create files that will fit onto either CDs or DVDs. It generates a self-extracting executable file.

I got the gold edition but havn't done anything with it. I didn't even open up the box of goodies. I just stuffed it in the back of my closet and hope that someday it will make for a good collectors item. Also, since so many good games have come out, I didn't really get a chance to play anything except HL2 on steam. Havn't even played CS:S much now that WoW is out.

i bought bronze, i convinced mysel that hl:s was going to suck (which apparantly, it does), and i do not like DOD, which, by the way, is still not released on the source engine.

I'm late to the game too. I would like to buy HL2 but I'm so into Joint Ops at the moment I haven't yet. I really really want DoD:Source, but that isn't out yet. WTF? When is it suppose to come out? CS is alright, but I've played it since beta 1 so I'm not into it much anymore. I think it's pretty disappointing that the only multiplayer you can play with HL2 is CS:S, which I don't really care about. Yes the singleplayer of HL2 is phenominal from what I've seen and little that I've played, but I buy games for the multiplayer.

Don't know if this is still valid, but GoGamer.com was selling HL2 basic for $35 and Collector's Edition for $60. For $60 that's a steal and that's what I got actually. Good price considering it comes with pretty much every half-life based game ever released, + DoD: Source when it comes out (better not suck).

EDIT: If that deal is over though, I wouldn't waste $80 on collector's ed.

Collectors Edition Box is a ripoff. You pay an extra $30 for a shirt that probably doesn't fit, a super tiny hint book, and HL:Source. I was really dissapointed.

bought the silver (well upgraded from an ati coupon). i played through half life again after beating hl2, i don't think source was much of an improvement but hey, for 10 bucks it was worth it to get the back catalogue.

went for Silver, wanted Gold as i would have liked the Audio CD mainly but also i like boxes with games...lol (old fashioned big boxes i mean, not DVD cases) however when i found out including post and packing the price would head up to $140 (im in London England) i decided no way i'll take silver.....hehe.
my old HL/Opfor discs were knackered and i wanted to get the games again anyhow so i was happy to pay the tenner extra and get Silver with the back catalogue.....

I got the Prima Strat guide for $10 on sale last week. Figured what the hell. After looking it over for 5 minutes, I felt ripped off. It blows. Only thing interesting was the CS maps from overhead. I just got into CS recently and still don't know the maps all that well.

I got Silver and don't regret it. I had only played HL1 for roughly an hour about 3 years ago. Never went back to it for some reason. So, I actually started HL:S last night and I'm enjoying it. Graphics aren't improved or anything, but I think it's great fun. Plus, I have some friends that still play regular CS because their comps aren't all very good.

Really, it comes down to what you want to play. If it's just HL2 and CS:S, Bronze. If you think you might play HL1 again or want to try out some of the mods in the back catalog, spend the extra $10. Heck, it's only $10.

If you buy the Collector's Edition, you get DoD: Source when it comes out? Where'd you read this? Does the package have a voucher or something?
