is it possible to choose in what version of directx half life 2 will render? ive got a 5200ultra 128mb card, and i know itll run like crap under 9 or 8.1. would i be able to run it better with dx7?
 
right, but can you choose which directx version to run under?

or is it automatically determined by the card?

I would say no simply because there was no drop down menu to downgrade to 7 from 8.1... But then again I don't have Dx9.
 
you can choose the DX level by adding -dxlevel "80" in the console or in the advanced start up options for dx level 8.0 or "81" for 8.1 and" 70" for dx 7.0 and so on.


You should be able to play just fine. I have seen it go just fine on my old 1.4 Tbird system with a Radeon 9200 as well as my laptops 64MB Radeon 9000.
 
Yeah ran wonderful on my G4mx420...my friend has a 9600XT and honestly I got about 80% of the details so I'm VERY happy with the result!
