HL2:EP2 Crashes at Exact Same Moment Every Time

I downloaded EP2 from Steam last week. I went to sleep, let it download overnight, and then launched the game. It seemed to run just fine after some 3-4 hours of play but now it crashes at the exact same moment, every time I play. It appears to occur during a level transition, and then I get the following error:

The instruction at "0x10628f3f" reference memory at "0x0e45f3c0". The memory could not be "read".

This is the first problem of this sort I have ever had with my rig.

Any ideas?

okay, I'll need the following info.

Motherboard Manufacturer with Model and BIOS Revision:
CPU Manufacturer and Model:
RAM Manufacturer and Model:

and I'll need you to burn http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and run memtest86+ for no less than 6 hours. and report back the results.

Here is my RIG:

http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=32406

I don't have the BIOS revision off the top of my head.

But I am running the latest GeForce drivers as well as all Windows updates, DX9C, etc.

I could see it being a RAM issue if it happened at random but it doesn't. It happens at the exact same instant/second every time.

Check this page out.

Scroll down to the bottom. The error occurs between the second-to-last and last images on that page.

well, I'd suggest the test, and you can also run Aquamark3d, and monitor the frame rates and quality and report back it's results as well as the memtest results.

addendum: the exact model number of the ram, will be helpful.

I noticed a log file that stores the following every time it crashes:

It ends with lots of entries like this:

Warning: After 1000ms the game has not rendered our last frame, clearing buffer
Timeout waiting on input stream for a frame
Warning: After 1000ms the game has not rendered our last frame, clearing buffer
Detected possibly crashed/killed game, exiting
Shutting down overlay

I am going to run the nTune System Stability test next.

I am really thinking it is the game. It has run flawlessly until this single scene.

Exact RAM:

Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2PT 2GB Kit DDR400 XMS3200 Memory w/Platinum Heat Spreader Retail

There were no problems reported during the nTune stress test.

I will run memtest this afternoon.

Got the same error. Have been playing 'Half Life 2', 'Half Life 2: Episode one' flawlessy, and 'Half Life 2: Episode two' worked fine up to what seems to be the same point as you: level transition, a friendly, wounded guy is lying just 10 feets ahead of me in a tunnel, but when I try to move towards him the game closes with the "memory cannot be read"-error.

I think it's a bug in the game...

I get this error message repeatedly at the exact same point in the game on two different systems:

The instruction at "0x10628f3f" reference memory at "0x0e44f3c0". The memory could not be "read".

This occurred just after the running through the antlion caves with the big antlion chasing me. I found a boarded up mine tunnel, whacked it open, fell into it, and was running down a mine shaft when the error occurred.

This does appear to be a bug in the application.

I would suggest asking the support guys at Valve. GTaudiophile, you are quite right in assuming that errors which occur in exactly the same spot are normally software, while random errors are normally hardware.

Still, there is a small chance of the culprit being your RAM. I agree with robisbell that you should run memtest86.

There it is. I get the same error on the same spot. Bug !!!

And, in case you wondered, GTaudiophile's signature means:

'I have nothing but I have everything when I have you!'

I'm also having the same problem, same place. Has anyone found a way around this yet?

Found this.

"...I got past it by turning to the right towards the pipes and strafing down the hallway. It seems to be a problem with some texture that needs to be loaded. I had three times where the game would CTD, and I got passed all three by figuring out where not to face the camera."

but only try this once your system passed it's memory test ;)

i don't know. it worked perfectly fine for me. my old rig

AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ @ 2.2Ghz (11x200)
ASUS A7N8X-X
1GB Mushkin DDR400 RAM
NVIDIA 6600

runs it fine. haven't had a single issue.it does seem to be the RAM related.
