HL2 demo and Steam account.

I started to install the Half-Life 2 demo today the installer told me that my current valve games would be converted to the steam format and I must be connected to the internet to play them.

What kind of <censored> is this?

I have a legitimate copy of Half-Life 1, so if my net connection goes down I will not be able to play it?

Am I reading this right? if so there is no Half-Life 2 for me.

I believe you can still play HL2 in offline mode. HL2 just requires that you "activate" it using the internet when you first install the game.

I love Steam. I bought the HL2 Silver Package and I got HL2, HL1, CS, CS:S, etc; about 14 games in all. Steam manages them all nicely and I never need a CD. I just download the game I want. Also, I think you MAY be able to just download HL1 now through Steam. You might never need your CD again since your CD-Key is now tied to your Steam account.

All you need to do to play in offline mode is disable your Internet connection or physically disconnect your cable/DSL. Start up Steam and Offline mode will be one of the options. Now an Internet connection shouldn't be necessary.

You'll have to connect to Steam at least one time so it can update/verify the games you have installed.

Actually, I'm with igowerf on this one. I finally purchased the HL2 silver package last night and this has been my first experiences with Steam. All of the games (HL:S, CS:S, HL1, CS:CZ, CS, HL😱F, etc.) DL'ed very quickly and I'm really suprised how well Steam works after all the crap I've been hearing.

Same here. I bought Silver a few weeks ago and have been thoroughly impressed since.

No need to worry about steam and your hl1 account.
It just groups all your valve games together in steam for convenience.

You can always play in offline mode if need be.
Plus, if you were to visit a friend, you could log on to your steam account on your frined's computer and your HL1 (as well as all your valve games) would be downloaded and available there.

Very (very) slowly

Expect to screw with it for a couple of hours on a 56K connect while they create, verify and update your game/account . . . .
(while you do NOTHING else on the 'net) :|

any OTHER game than HL2 and i would never bother . . . . .

I have dial-up and I am currently in India. Steam took about 10 minutes to validate my game. I didnt have to go online after that one time to continue playing the game.

i also guess you haven't bothered to connect to get the fixes and updates. 😛

(after i got my latest "stutter-fix" this morning, HL2 won't start at all without being connected to the 'net) :|

your dial-up in India is probably much better than mine in the Stix, USA

you are right. I rarely come online from home. Also, I removed steam from the windows start-up processes.
