Has anyone experienced this when you register your key with Steam?

I bought the game from Walmart about 2 weeks ago, and just now got around to installing it (because I was debating on whether or not to keep it or sell it), and I went to register my key with Steam, and it said that my key was already in use on someone else's account!

I can't find my receipt for the life of me -- so I can't take it back to Wally World and get a new one (the package wasn't opened at all).

So now I have to wait 6-8wks to get a new key from Valve (sending them the cd envelope with the key on it).

*sigh*

Karma I guess... that's what I get for waiting around for 2 weeks...

You didn't like leave it sitting out where some "friend" could have stolen the key or anything did you? Are you sure you didn't already register the key under a different username or you are not mistyping your user name or something?

I really don't have any friends (I'm a stay/work at home mom) that are into gaming (most are other moms).

Plus, the game as been locked away in our lock box in our closet (where I put stuff where I don't want my 4 year old to destroy).

The key is the exact key as the one of the envelope. I got an email from Steam saying that its registered to someone else's account -- with the key that I typed in -- exact same key as the one in front of me.

Apparently its a common occurance, if they have a key reset process over at Valve.

I might try and take it back somewhere else for an exchange. Either way, it would get sent back to the distributor - faulty product. I called Target and they said as long as I printed out the email that I got from Steam, that they would exchange it.

I really don't want to wait 6-8 weeks for a new key.

I know I didn't register it under another username, because I never installed it until last night (because I was debating on whether or not to keep it or not after I got it home and opened it up).

We'll see...

Keep it, it's one of the best FPS's I've ever played, and most people agree. MaximumPC rated it 11/10, which I don't believe they've ever done.

Amazingly enough... I was getting ready to go, and cleaning out my jean's pockets, and I found my receipt! LOL

So I'll be going back to Walmart and getting a new one -- hopefully they'll give me a new receipt, just in case this one is like the other one. I really don't want to go through this again.

Yea, definentely try exchanging it. It beats getting treated like a thief and waiting for over a month because of someone else's mistake.
