HL2 and CS:S

I dont currently own either but am planning to buy them after i build a new pc but i'm confused. is css part of HL2 or do you have to buy it separately. i ask this because i saw at a number of retailers the css games but i also heard that css is the multiplayer part of HL2. sorry if this is somewhat of a basic question but i'd rather not buy something i dont need to buy.

CS:S is separate. you can buy packs that have it and HL2 together though.

CS:S orginally was sold as part of a package with HL2. Now I believe you can just pick and choose what you want using steam.

Yeah, the original HL2 package came with HL2, CS:S, and HL2😀M. They then split them up, now HL2 is standalone, and the boxed CS:S version contains Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat: Source and Half Life 2: Deathmatch.

You can of course download them all individually or in different "packages" via Steam.
