HL2: 64 Bit! :)

My steam just updated and told me it's now 64 bit. I don't have an A64 however. 🙁

I'm guessing that this game will see a very nice boost seeing as it's CPU limited on most hardware at just about every resolution.

Has anyone seen any improvements yet? I'm guessing that people with a dual cored AMD rig will see at least a 25 % boost when using the latest ATI/nVidia drivers combined with this patch for FREE. 😀

somehow i dont see how a patch can change a 32-bit game into a 64-bit game.. usually you would have to recompile the whole darned thing into 64-bit code and a patch doesn't seem like it has the ability to do so!

but perhaps it can provide some 64-bit "enhancements" of somesort.. *shrug*

i really dont want to reinstall windowsx64 to use it. i mean it was such a b*tch to find drivers for my stuff, and the most important things (my cell phone) it doesnt have drivers for

There are 2 different versions, not just a "patch" for 64-bit. If you have Windows XP-64, it will run the 64-bit specific version instead of the 32 bit version.

I just reinstalled Steam / HL2 after putting together my new system listed below. Not sure how to tell the difference between 64 and 32-bit, but I am running XP-64...

Then you have to find new versions (mostly) of any utilities you use, antivirus, firewall, etc.. Not sure if it will catch on quick enough..

Not true, the only apps that *need* 64-bit specifc versions are one that have drivers included. Most of my current apps are not 64-bit specific.

Well l cant be sure of the detail , but the patch for Far Cry took it from 32 bit to 64 , it was a large patch , but overall far cry is a bad exsample of 64 bit pc gaming, it has alot of glitches and niggly problems, HL2 l would susspect they have done a similar thing with there patching.
Im going to chech HL 2 64 bit out and see if its better than Far Cry.
One can only hope !

Bumping for some feedback on how the 64bit version plays. I have a trial version of XP-64 that I may install if there are big improvements.

for the people that have win xp 64 and running half life 2 with the new 64 bit update, is there any visual quality diffrence?

why would they change the visuals, besides the FPS for equal visuals? Unless the video drivers are not the same 32bit to 64bit (different features, different versions)... it would seem logical to expect the same visuals.

Put another way... it would seem to be a "bug" that you got different visuals (other than FPS) with the same settings, same hardware, same drivers.

I think the 64bit version of far cry had added detail(s) to vegetation and added water effects? I'm hoping Valve did some visual "tweaks" as well....Anyone play it yet?

Well its a vast improvement on far crys attempt !
Its alot smoother a little more texture detail, nothing major though, if you have an fx AMD chip and run 64 bit windows you might as well run it in its so called ''64 bit mode'', it is slightly better, but not enough for the general user to pick up on straight away, alot of people dont even use AA or AF still, l dought they will notice any difference, but for people that like EXTEEME detail , its for you !
Mine ran first go no install problems hope you all have luck....
