HL crashes when I join a game

When I try to join an online CS game, HL closes and it says hl.exe is generating errors or something and my computer won't respond at all (I have to reset it). Anyone know why it would do this? I am running Win2k, the latest ver of HL, and have already tried reinstalling.

I am running in 1600x1200 OpenGL. I don't have fairly recent video card drivers ..

Can you set the HL.exe file to run in Windows 98 and/or ME compatability mode?

That's what I needed to do for it to work in XP.

CS would open fine, but every time it tried to load the game it would crash.

It isn't every time. It is usually after the 2nd or 3rd time joining a game. How do I set the compatability mode?

Right click -> Properties. There's a compatability tab in XP.
