Hitting 100 GB per Platter: Seagate ST3200822A

Summary:
The next generation of hard drives has been introduced by Seagate. Only a couple of days ago, a fresh Cuda 7200.7 (aka ST 3200822A) arrived at our lab. 7,200 rpm, 8 MB cache and an amazing 100 GB per platter should do a good job, theoretically. Check out what this new drive is all about.

What's so special about the 100 GB platter?

I read the article, but don't really get what the big deal is.
I guess that could mean 300GB drives. I assume the current 250GB ones are 3 80GB platters.

Higher density equates to higher performance and greater capacity and even if you do not require maximum capacity, you can have more with less noise when using a single platter instead of two or more of lower density.

Uhh, those have been available for quite a while.
At least around here, and we(Sweden) typically get stuff later than NA.

like what?

the bigger the platters = bigger drives
the denser the platters = better the perfomance

Yeah, that is exactly what we were missing.
I thought somebody might have extra input or have info this article does not have.
