I enjoyed it...sure, it didn't cover more than a tiny fraction of the material in the book, but that's to be expected. For what could be fit into a mere 2 hr movie, I was happy w/ the job they did. There was simply no way they could put a 1000+ page book into move form.

One nitpick: The heart of gold was supposed to be running shoe shaped. 😛 That said, it looked damn cool!

I just got back from seeing the movie and i must say.......I havent been this disappointed since the end of Star Wars Episode I.

care to elaborate

I guess i was disappointed with the movie because i loved the book and the movie wasnt even close. I found more enjoyment listening to the radio mini series than i did this. (btw the radio mini series was awsome.)

I hate to disagree with you guys but it was easily the worst movie I have seen in a LONG time.

To start off, I have not read any of the books, but went to see it because I am into monty pythons style of humor and also into sci fi. However, I can honestly say that the movie failed in keeping me interested and in suspense.

I really did not care what was going to happen next and found the movie to be very boring. The depressed robot's one liners got old rather quick.

If it was on tv, I would have changed the channel.

For a better understanding of my taste in movies, I loved Gladiator, Matrix, Old School, Kungfu Hustle, etc.

Am I the only one who finds British humour not to be all that humourous? I couldn't stand Monty Python and my ears bleed when guys at work get that high pitched whiney british accent and spout not so funny lines from the movie. Office Space > Monty . 😛

I loved the books. THey were very, very good, and I liked the humor. For those of you who can't find the humor or don't get it, try reading the beggining of So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. As much as I liked the books though, I'd never watch the movie. Even if it was supposed to be good, I still probably would not watch it, and that goes for most books I read. Movies ruin my image of what the characters, setting, etc. look like, and I hate that.

Yes.

Yeah I saw it last night and wasn't very impressed. I just didn't find that the same type of humour was there as was in the books and radio series.
I wouldn't have minded that they diverged from the book that much as long as the quick british dialogue was there, but I think it was seriously lacking.

I saw it, and thought it was pretty decent up until the crappy ending. The movie just stops all of a sudden with a "and they lived happily ever after" thing thrown in. I wanted to see the restaurant at the end of the universe.

One thing that made it drag was the repeated themes.... like the Vogons are bureaucrats (yes, you told us that in five scenes already), the President is an egomaniac with a huge wardrobe (thanks again and again), and the Heart of Gold has an Infinite Improbability Drive that requires a series of cheesy graphics each time it is used. I would have like to see more of Ford and less of Zaphod.

i thought this movie was fantastic. I'm not big on the british humor thing, but i found this one to be quite accessible. Try it out, it's mixed among the critics and certainly seems like a love hate thing. I thought it didn't look good, but i was surprised 😀

So long and thanks for all the fish!

i woe the day the consortium of angry house wives creates the POV gun 🙁

I saw it last night, and I quite liked it. Shy of greatness, but still pretty good. It's about the best I could have hoped for realistically. I wasn't all that happy with Zaphod, but he grew on me a little.

I don't think a lot of Americans will "get it", British humor sometimes means that you have to have a little knowledge to understand the joke.

then it must be an EXCELLENT movie 🙂

Btw. of course i LOVED the books time back - a must read for all geeks, computer freaks etc...cult literature of the 80s....its not coincidental that the majority of people who like(d) the books are NOT necessarely the ones with an IQ below 80 🙂

I hated the movie. I've read the first three books and loved those, but they turned this movie into a romantic comedy which I hated. I feel shafted out of my $8.00

Yep they totally make up a new plot to the movie with many of the important elements from the book.

Umm.. The book didn't really HAVE a plot, so to make a Hollywood movie, they'd need a plot.

should i read the book first?

It's a trilogy.

In five parts.

tri = 3

You really don't know? The book was supposed to be a trilogy, but then came So Long and Thanks For All The Fish. If that weren't enough, we were given Mostly Harmless (a term used in the Guide to describe Earth folks.)

Eh. I just saw it, it was okay, but nothing memorable. Just... okay. Barely. I was a big fan of the books but haven't picked any of them up in years. Some of the dialog was obviously word-for-word from the books, but in all honestly I wouldn't remember how well the movie followed some of the things that happened.

Many scenes I just thought they just could have done better.

This movie rocks. It CAN be enjoyed if you never read the books. It's better if you did. The story was trimmed a little and minor changes made to the story, but honestly, it makes for a much better movie. I would have liked Ford to have a British accent, but I thought the casting was a bullseye. The visual quality was terrific.

It was a hundred times better than anything released recently. I'm pleased as punch that something a little different comes our way, instead of the usual rip-off vomit-fest. This will be purchased and added to the library, my highest compliment.

I was a little disappointed in the movie. It veered a bit. Granted, it's nice to see Trillian in a shower scene (anyone else find Zooey Deschanel mysteriously attractive?)... but how it ends... eh. The restaurant at the end of the universe isn't on any side dammit.

I gotta admit tho, I loved marvin.. ha. I guess I didn't know what to expect, it seemed like it would be rather difficult to make the book into a movie... so much explaining needed.

Sadly, disappointed. They turned it too much into a sappy love story. Yea, in the books there was a connection between Dent and Trillian, but it swayed far too much from the book for my liking. And why in the hell was Zaphods second head 'evil'. Bad... plus it should have been side by side rather than below. 🙁

I thought it was above average. It's one of those movies where you don't really laugh out loud much, if at all, but it still gives off the vibe of being funny.
