I would have settled for a 4" 1024x600.
4.5" is reaching the limit as far as phone goes.
But if you can easily put 1028x720 on a 5" and call it a mini tablet with ultra mobility.

I understand its 1" larger, but the dpi is almost the same as the iPhone 4 though, right?

iPhone 4 - 326 ppi
Hitachi - 329 dpi

I assume they are using ppi/dpi interchangeably (though DPI i think is more representative of printing than display resolution).

Additionally, iphone 4 shows a contrast of 800:1, so the Hitachi has it beat there. Not sure on brightness but just taking those into account, it just sounds like a big Retina display.

Same here. I think 4.3" is as big as of a phone as I comfortably use one handed. They could probably fit 4.5" in the same size as the HD2, but I doubt they'll want to remove the earpiece and button space and logo space.

iPhone 6... :D

To switch to that resolution would require them to change the aspect ratio. The devs have been using the 3:2 aspect ratio for 3 years now, that plus the 4:3 on the iPad keeps things relatively simple.

The great news for consumers is that there are more and better high resolution displays being made. Jaggies are practically gone on these displays even without anti-aliasing.

One of the reasons I will not be buying an iPad 2 or Android tablet is the seeming lack of a high resolution display. The iPhone 4's display has ruined me and a high resolution display for a tablet is a make or break deal for me.
