Hitachi or Seagate

I'm using 2 Hitachi 250gb SATA hds in RAID 0 with a $12 SATA card I got off ebay while I'm waiting for my BroadCom BC4852. I have been benchmarking in Pinnacle Studio 9, and it posted 113mb/s read, and 68mb/s write. By far the best I've seen on my server...

Unless you're into some pretty hardcore stuff, I doubt you'll even be able to tell any real world difference speed wise between the two harddrives...

I'd go with Seagate for the warranty. I'm pretty sure a Seagate will be quieter also.

I buy hitachi... can't really compare it to seagate, as I've not bought one, but my hitachi is definately quiet.
 
If the Hitachi is faster and the Seagate lacks acoustic management, that would weigh heavily against the additional warranty for me. But why are you considering these particular models versus ze affaire chaude du jour?
 
I'd go with the Seagate myself. I've heard a lot of horror stories about Hitachi drives, and they were the one's who bought IBM's hdd business. (Deathstar fiasco)

There are two 300GB SATA Seagates in my current system, both have been functioning without flaw since January 05 when I bought them.
 
I have 4 Seagates in my system; 2 SATA, 2 IDE. My SATA drives, 80G Barracuda 7200.7 models, have audible read/write activity. One failed and was replaced by the PC vendor. One IDE drive, a 160G Barracuda 7200.7 model, is dead silent. The other IDE drive, a 400G Barracuda 7200.8 model, is also silent.

I actually ordered and received a 300G 7200.7 drive. It "clanged" and hung my bus, so I RMA'ed the drive. The replacement I received was a 400G (instead of 300G) drive and is a newer model (7200.8 instead of 7200.7). The shipping invoice for the RMA drive clearly states they received a 300G and shipped a 400G as a replacement though I don't know why this was done. Your RMA mileage may vary ...

yeap, same here, that time they were called the glamorous IBM drives that died twice in one year for me

Bad sectors and such. Until I could hear physical sounds
I will never dare to buy another IBM again.. aka Hitachi now

Don't get me wrong, they are fast drives. But get into an accident way too often to consider it reliable
 
If you'd be willing to consider something that you didn't list I'd suggest a samsung spinpoint, they are quieter and faster then the seagate, if your dead set on one of those two I'd get the seagate
 
Seagate is the brand I would choose - they seem to make the most reliable HDDs at this time.

My first rigs had Seagates in them, which still run after 8+ years! I made the switch to a Deathstar 75GXP (which failed on me recently) followed by a couple of 7K250's - one of which needed to be RMA'd. Its a cyclic thing I guess - and Seagate rules in the present crop.
 
It's absolutely absurd how many people still rant about the "Deathstar" and say Hitachi sucks. How long does it take for you to shut up about one bad model? By the same logic I could rant about how WD is terrible because they had tons of 1.6G drives that died.

I never got any Deathstars, and I always found IBM to be extremely reliable in IDE and SCSI drives before they were bought by Hitachi. Now, though, I wouldn't get a Hitachi simply because their RMA policy sucks. If you call them up and say your drive has bad sectors, they'll refuse to RMA it. They'll tell you to download their utility to low-level the drive and mark the sectors bad so that it will format, and then the utility will say there is absolutely nothing wrong with the drive. Their diagnostic program can even throw out an error that says the drive was damaged by shock, then they will also refuse to RMA the drive. If you actually do get them to RMA a drive, they will refuse to cross-ship. They will wait until they recieve the drive then sit on it for up to 14 days before they send it back. This is their policy.

I know Hitachi drives are fast, but I don't think I'm ever buying another one. Maxtor has also changed their RMA policy every couple years. For awhile they had a "no hassle" policy where they would just basically say, "Is it broken? Then we'll cross-ship you a new one." Now they're back to a much more obnoxious policy.

I will only buy Seagate, WD and Samsung. Seagate drives use more power than Hitachi, and they're not incredibly fast, but they don't try to screw you when a drive dies (and it's not very often that one dies).
 
So are the Samsung spinpoints faster than the Seagate right now i got my eye set on Seagate just because i heard Hitachi's RMA policy is bad. Just to put it this Way i want a 80gig sata 2/sata150 and ncq there is the Hitachi and the Seagate.

Which is faster?
Which is quieter?
Which is Reliable?

Do not even think of anything else because I have had two Western Digital WD1200JB die. First one in June 04' then the RMA replacement drive Oct. 04'. Went out and got a Seagate 200gb 7200.7 and have not had one problem since! I believed the WD died from all the I/O for my file server and the Seagate is running strong.

My roomate lost ALL of his MP3's he had stored on his IBM Deathstar and he vowed to stay away from anything IBM except their laptops.

does everyone understand that Hitachi bought IBM deathstar and Hitachi are not related its a diff company.

i want a hitachi for speed and quiet.
i want a seagate for reliablity.

I don't think they intentionally ship out 400gb just so you get more, it's because they ran out of 300gb in their stockpile. You are one lucky sob

When you look at the refurbish area and see there are more hitache then there are seagate doesn't that tell you something? That Hitachi have a much higher rma then seagate?

Talk about bogus assumptions!

I don't like Hitachi very much, but I'd be interested in hearing where you came up with that tidbit of information. Not that it makes sense even if you can back it up. If the local shop stocks Manufactorer A and Manufacturer B, and they happened to get in a batch of refurb drives from Manufacturer B, it's totally incorrect to assume that they are inherently less reliable than Manufacturer A just because the store doesn't have refurbs from Manufacturer A.
