Hitachi drives.... 1 or 3 years warranty?

I'm looking at the Hitachi 160GB SATA drive from Newegg, but it lists the warranty as 1 year. Most here have reported a 3 year warranty. So, which is it?

If it's a 1 year, then most likely I'll go with the Barracuda SATA, although it's going to be bit louder....

DO NOT TOUCH THEM!

Hitachi/IBM makes about the worst hard drives on the planet...they had such high failure rates they were nicknamed the "DeathStar" series instead of "DeskStar". Get the Seagate - you'll be much better off.

Wasn't that reputation earned a few years ago now? Reviews declare it the fastest, quitest SATA drive you can buy.

My Hitachi 80 GB SATA HD purchased way back early last year came with a 3 year warranty (also checked with Hitachi's warranty verifier). Perhaps the 1 year warranty info Newegg has listed came from when Hitachi downgraded their 3 year warranty back in '03 & soon after brought it back.

FYI: If ya wanna save $5, ZZF has your drive with a listed 3 year warranty.

Yea it was a few years ago. Wonder why it's still being brought up.

It was the fastest 7200 RPM hard drive @ the time but now Maxtor's latest has it beat overall. Don't know about quietest. 😕

That's the old reputation. They've improved. And actually, I have an IBM 20gb 60GXP...one of the so-called "DeathStars". It was in use up until last week, still running strong! I only removed it becuase I needed more space on that system. I put in my old WD 40gb 8mb cache drive instead.

I'm sure they've improved, but when I build my LAST system (which was about 6 years ago), I put in 2 Deskstar HDD's in it and one lasted about 3 months, and the other about 9. Just simply turned into paper weights. Stopped working, and luckily I backed up all important data each and every day so the loss was minimal.

And yes: Seagate > all as far as I'm concerned.
