Hitachi Deskstar 250gig $50 AR at bestbuy

A friend of mine was at best buy today to get the 160 gig WD for $40AR and he found the Hitachi Deskstar 250gig(8mb cache, 3 year warranty) for $50 after two $40 MIRs. Total came to about $140 with tax. 90 more gigs for $10 more isn't that bad of a deal if you ask me. I didn't see it in the ad and I couldn't find the drive on their website, so I don't know if this is a closeout deal or anything, but you guys can also check your BestBuy today.

No. Now maxtor = deathstor. only a 1 yr warr. and that may be optomistic these days. If maxtor had a 3 yr warr. they'd be OOB in 2.

maxtor harddrives suck.. hands down. Ive had 2 die, ill never buy another. MY "IBM deathstar" i still running on my other computer for what? 5-7 yrs, and people complained about them. Its all pot luck w/ these things. The only guarentee you have is w/ warranties, and ill go for longer warranties now!

Maxtor drives die if they get to hot and if they are the low end models. Buy the MAxline III with the 5 year warranty and I bet the quality is a lot better.

the maxlineIII is a diamondmax 10 with 5 yr warrenty.

Lucked out and got the last one at my Best Buy. When I first got there they were out except for a open box one that was priced at $160something. So I went and looked around for a little bit and by the time I got back they had put another one on the shelf.

Out of stock at the Ames store, but there's a couple more at the Des Moines store. Yeah, I'm in Iowa - quit yapping 😛

1) Rebates from manufacturers like Sony, Hitachi, Symantec and other mainstream product brandnames are reliable. The more troublesome rebates come from the retailers, like Frye, who may continue posting a rebate offer for a product beyond its expiration date, then deny the rebate ever existed. But whatever the rebate offer and source, be sure to read the fine print and follow directions when submitting your rebate request.

2) The biggest problem with drives of IBM's design occurred with the 75 GXP, which was an attempt to use five platters instead of three. Once the complaints and lawsuits were publicized, the detriment to IBM"s reputation was an exaggeration. There were even lesser problems with the 60 GXP drive, but we have three of those still running in this family -- two in RAID 0 -- for three and four years, and there has never been a problem with them. My cousin also had one which I later required after it had been "recovered" through a software utility. His problem was frequent power outages and insufficient battery backup for his computer systems, and this may have led to the failure he experienced -- and my "freebie" in acquiring his drive.

3) The Hitachi drives have always scored well in the revlews, even those which had been manufactured before Hitachi took over the IBM hard-drive division. Whether SATA or PATA should not matter -- only the performance and performance specs.

Personally I've had the opposite experience.
It took me 7 months and numerous emails to get a $50 rebate on a Hitachi drive. The rebate company they hired even claimed that I had not sent in the "proper" bar code label.
I sent them proof of it and they took another 2 months to send out the rebate (after more emails).

Frys on the other hand has (so far) worked very smoothly for me. The only hook with them is the expiration dates can be just a few days after purchase. Though I haven't run into that problem lately.

please you guys for your own sake, do not buy a Deskstar.

I wondered why it was referred to a "deathstar", and i found out about 2 months after building my computer. I have 2 80 gig deathstars and buying them was the biggest mistake i have ever made. when it comes to data storage, no discount, no matter how dirt cheap it is, can replace the peace of mind you get with a reliable hard drive. I have a seagate, a Western Digital, and the 2 deskstars all in my computer, and and seagate and WD have yet to cause my any trouble, but my 2 deskstars have crapped out over 6 times in the 6 months since Ive owned my computer.

Stay away from Hitachi!

Personally, I have had two Hitachi rebates get denied, and two 250gb PATA Deskstars suffered minor to major data loss. Without changing ANY configuration settings, I threw in 250GB Maxtors, and I've nad no problems with them.

IBM made the deathstars. Hitachi took over after the whole fiasco. Hitachi still offers a 3 year warranty as opposed to the one year from maxtor and WD. Reliability for this drive is about average.

I find it funny that these drives have both crapped out on you once every month for the past 6 months, yet you still keep them in RAID-0.
