Hitachi CML175SXW2B - 17" LCD HyDis for $419 Shipped!

Hello-

This is my first post - I've been lurking on and off for awhile.

I have been researching LCD's as I am in need of upgrading my 6+ yr old Panasonic S70 17" CRT. I use the computer a lot for business and gaming, so not just any old LCD would do. While researching, I found that the Hercules ProphetView 920 Pro (17" LCD with 20ms response time) was reviewed to be "the best" by Tom's Hardware Guide

The Hercules monitor is near-impossible to find in the US - the only place I even found a listing for it was on Amazon, but they are not available there. So, I researched the display and found that the Hitachi CML175SXW2B has the same HyDis display. So, basically the only difference is cosmetic between the two monitors. Make sure you get that exact model # - Hitachi uses similar model numbers for a lot of their 17" lcds, e.g. CML175B, although there are drastically different displays on these different models.

Then I found Monitor's Direct, which has the LCD on sale this month for $419.00. NewEgg also has it onsale for $413. Take you pick between the two sites - Monitor's Direct has free ground shipping, and a 3-yr premium warranty (next-day swap) for $.01 this month. NewEgg has free 2-day shipping - I chose Monitor's Direct due to the warranty.

$419.01 for the best-rated gaming 17" LCD available (Hercules is $550 by comparison) shipped and with a 3-yr next-day exchange warranty seems like a pretty hot deal to me!

very shady vendor and thread.
reseller ratings on this site has less than 20 transactions in the past 6 months.

unfortunately it doesnt look nearly as great as the ProphetView 920 *sigh* (gazes fondly off into the sky, in hopes of one day owning one )

i and a few of my friends have gone through Monitors Direct and they have been a good vendor... in fact i got my Hitachi CML175SXWB from them for a similar price last year and it has been great. maybe they dont get too many ratings because they only sell monitors and many times their prices arent as competitive as those you might find elsewhere...

last year's hot deal thread:

Huh?! I don't know what you are reading, but Monitors Direct has outstanding ratings from Reseller ratings. They are first rate. They recently changed their name from Cornerstone.com, which has been around for some time.

I have this exact monitor and I really like it. I got for $399 with free shipping and discount coupon a few weeks ago.

My thread does kinda read like an infomercial, huh? I get marketing-itis at times, but I assure you I have nothing to do with any vendor - well, technically BBY as they bought the GeekSquad last year, but I definitely feel no affinity for them except to liberally use the employee discount for my purchases. They have a real poor selection for LCD's, though...

You just sounded like a dude who did his research. I own a CML174, which is awsome so I assume this monitor is even better. Nice first post 😉

Thanks to TheLizardMan from General Hardware for pointing out the CML175B is $399 right now at Monitors Direct, in Ca it came to $431.93 shipped.. the 174/5B seems slighter better with higher brightness, contrast and faster 16ms Response time.

J~

Employee discount at BBY for GeekSquad employees.

The CM175SB is based on a different display - of the 16ms displays that I have seen reviewed, none are better than the 20ms CML175SXW2B -- one of the reasons being that the 16ms times are based off of black-to-white, and not color like the 20ms monitors' reported response time.

Anyways, you can read more about that at Tom's Hardware Guide - I am not into LCD technology enough to explain why the Hitachi monitor I orginally mentioned is better than the CM175SB. It is kinda like saying a car with a higher horsepower engine is better than a smaller horsepower engine - there is more to a car than that, just like there is more to a LCD than response time.

also, those 16ms ones are probably not 24bit displays, meaning even though they are 16ms they do it at a lower 18bit color resolution and use dithering....that is, if i have my facts straight

Update: Just received my monitor today! It is gorgeous, and is definitely the HyDis display from the Hercules LCD's.

The review on Tom's is for the 16ms display, which uses the AU Optronics display (Viewsonic). Hitachi, in their infinite wisdom, uses really confusing model numbers.

Dead-pixel policy is 5 dead I believe - the manufacturer warranty. Although, I received their 3-yr warranty for $.01 with this purchase - next day swap-out, don't know if it changes the dead-pixel policy or not. ---Just checked online, same as manufacturer warranty except that you get the accelerated swap-out.

well, i must say i appreciate the post, i have spent some time trying to find the hercules to no avail, and then tried finding something with the hydis panel, gave up on that and then this jumps out at me

so thanks for the post

I got one as well. I don't think it's better or worse than the 172X. Slight ghosting has been perceptible in every game. UT2004 did not ghost on the 172X...period. The ghosting on this panel is not bad at all though and every game is certainly playable...where as some games on the 172X, like Counter-strike, were near unplayable for me. Out of the box the settings are perfect...I never succeeded in getting the 172X even halfway decent after playing with the settings for hours. Viewing angle blows the 172X out of the water as well. One dead pixel in the center bottom of the screen, but it's not annoying.

I'll be getting a VP171B delivered Monday and will be able to compare them side by side. I have some experience with the 172X too so I'll compare all three in a review in general hardware.

Overall, I like this panel better, but I only had the 172X for a few days.

I just bought the CML175B, and I like it, but I cant get it exactly how I want it, and the colors get dark at the top of the screen.

I need good color accuracy.

Should I go ahead and order the Hydis Hitachi as well???

OR would a dell 1703fp be a good choice?

I dont care about gaming.

Jist image quality and color.

Is the Hydis better for graphics work?

Look like this model is discontinued. Too bad Hydis 20ms is now officially unavailable in the US. guess I have to turn my eye to the AUO 16ms panel...

A whole bunch of us just did this deal here 😀

Mine is beautiful😀 If you don't like it for any reason with-in 30 days they will take care of ya😀

WTT

Bump and Oh God I love this forum - thrid day here and I've already spent $600 . . . but I could'nt be happier!!
