I keep seeing news and reviews on their new 1TB and other HD's for months, but were in the hell are they? I am not going to buy a 500GB HD for $134 when it could drop to $100 to $110 in less than a week. I need another HD bad and already have my 3 in 4 HD module for the extra HD.
 
This drive showed up briefly this morning (4/25) on Buy.com and ComputerBrain.com before quickly going out of stock. Actually, as of right now, 9:42 PM EST on 4/25, Buy.com is saying the retail version is still in stock. However, if you call and spend 30 minutes on hold, you find out their inventory is zero. In the case of Buy.com, I'm not sure it ever got any in stock. I ordered this drive two weeks ago from Buy.com and this morning, I got an email saying "the product you were interested in is now in stock hurry now and order!" Huh? I thought I already did order! Of course, my backorder didn't ship today and I don't know if it's because of 1) Buy.com's lousy inventory control; or 2) they shipped out to people who placed new orders today, ignoring their back orders; or 3) they never had any in stock or they got some but didn't have enough to cover all the back orders. Whatever the explanation, I canceled my order and am going to wait it out until this drive is in more plentiful supply, by which time Seagate may come out with its 1TB.

Check out www.cdw.com. It claims orders placed today will ship within 6 days. However, they want 445 bucks before shipping! Too overpriced for me but if you're interested:

Thanks for the great detailed information, but I'm actually wanting these drives to bring the price/storage ratio down below a quarter.

When is the Seagate 1TB due out?
 
After following PC component prices for about twenty years, I'll bet almost anything that 500GB drives aren't going to drop $25 or $35 in less than a week after the 1TB drives are introduced. Terabyte drives won't directly influence the pricing of 500GB drives until the Terabyte drives go under $250. Right now, the two drive sizes aren't competing on price at all.
 
When Seagate releases there 1TB the prices should fall to the $100 to $110 mark. My reasoning is that only two platter's will be used in a 500GB HD. I am I wrong?
 
Could be. But it's apparent that, even if the 1TB drives were never released, the price of 500GB drives will hit the $100 level shortly. The 320GB versions are down to $80 now.
