And If I were to crack open the case no warranty ?

There's a sticker covering one of the screw holes on the back of the enclosure that says "Warranty Void If Removed," so all the people at FW and SD entering their S/N at Hitachi's website and figuring they have 13 months of warranty left are probably fooling themselves, unless they're better at removing these stickers than I will be.

I have yet to crack it open, but I don't plan to use this as an external because of the poor enclosure. The reviews look dismal, which may be why this is so cheap.

how is it ?

I read reviews on bestbuy, and they didn't look too great.

something about Drive spinning up then spinning down and disconnecting on it's own.

From what I've read from other forums, this seems to be correct. The real value, IMO, is the internal drive, not the USB case. If you need/want it for external, I would avoid. If you want it for an internal drive, this deal is the hottest of any 1TB drive right now.

And If I were to crack open the case no warranty ?

I don't know the answer to that. If there are no stickers or tape to break on the case, I would assume that you're OK (as long as you don't mangle the case opening it)! 😛

Edit: SludgeFactory posted the above post while I as posting this one. So YMMV on the warranty issue. At this point, I'm going to just wait for a regular internal drive of some sort.

yea I think i'll just wait it out for the internals to drop.
I really want it as an external drive but prefer firewire.

I had a friend pick one up for me tonight... For those wondering if it voids the warranty, I am sure it does. However, I don't believe that it should. What is the difference between this drive and an internal? None, except that this drive has a 15 month warranty, not a 3-5 year warranty. The drive is the same core product that they give warranties on for many more years. So, again, I am sure that this does indeed void the warranty, but as a consumer I do not think it should, provided my warranty claim is about the defective drive, rather than the casing.

Oh well... I still might have him return it for me... 1GB Drive is too big for my needs I think... Though this is a stellar drive...

I had a Buffalo external drive go bad on me after the one year warranty expired so I opened the case and the drive inside was a WD drive with a three year warranty. I'm not sure if the Hitachi is the same, but I wouldn't doubt they just put a normal 3.5" drive in there with the standard warranty.

btw-I just bought one to use with my server and used a reward zone card and the 12% coupon to get it for $190 after taxes (stupid 8.25% taxes).

-1 points for you... You forgot one major peice of information! What happened with the WD drive? Did you claim warranty on it, or attempt it? Or just said "WTH" and bought a new one? Hehe... Kidding about -1 stuff... 😀

People from FW and SD have entered the Serial number from the internal drive and received the same warranty period as the external number: 1 year.

Decisions, decisions... wait until next Q, or buy now... I did just find a spare 320 on the shelf, so I have a little spare space left.

:| NOT a good deal, at least in my case... :|

Went to one of my Local BB's tonight and they had 3 in stock. Snagged one & used the 10%
off coupon listed above in another post - nice! 😀

Got home & let it get acclimated to my local atmospheric conditions in my abode. Plugged it in and got nada ~ nothing ~ zip. Not even a spinning hum. The unit lit up but for $179 clams to have something behave as a bad taste christmas ornament - I mean, honestly!

I shook the inert paperweight and heard some loose noises comming from inside (oh-oh!)

Used a flashlight to peek inside the grills at the ends of the unit and saw BOTH power & sata connections not attached to where they should be. Also looked at the pins that was showing in the light of truth - sure didn't look like pins for sata & power connectors - double row of pins!?! :Q

Made a mad dash back to the Best Buy store before they closed at 10:00PM & had it exchanged for one of the other units still on the shelf. Went over to the Geeks counter to have them check da goods before retuning home in joy.

Well, the head Geek spent about 10 min. hooked up to 2 pc's but no alerts from said pc's that a Terabyte Drive was trying to make nice...he gave it the "hearing" test and didn't notice a drive hum either. I lent him my flashlight and he saw that this 2nd unit's Sata & Power lines were also not connected. hmm...

:clock: >spin, dry, repeat< :clock:

OK, Third exchange - same results as in 2nd unit - Geek asked if he can open shell and take a peek - I said go ahead~make my day! 😎

WELL!!!! Lo and behold - Inside was a SEAGATE SCSI DRIVE!!! with a double-row pin out.

:frown: NOT FUNNY :frown:

Geek explained that all three will go back to MFG (CHINA?) since he said they were sealed before shipment to BB's

What a disappointing night! :brokenheart:

Will try another BB's tomorrow

That's the only realistic explanation I can see. I wonder just how many times those scum did it at that store. Probably enough to qualify for felony theft, which they'll likely never get caught for.

At least TurtleBlue had the foresight to check the replacements out at the Geek Squad counter.

extremely tempting and I do need space and a quite drive (hitachi is only second next to samsung idle noise wise). I go through about 6-7 gigs a week easy...

Thanks OP. This was great timing for me.... I have a hungry server that was getting full. I picked up two. Used the 10% coupon twice on 2 in and out buys.
I pulled one to use internal on the server and left the other in its case to use as an external backup for the server files. So far, both are humming along just fine <knock>.

So far, 🙂

In for 2 (the max), thanks for the update. Im still shocked at this price.

Its funny that they dont reduce the lower GB versions too. The 750Gb drive is $80 more.

Currently listing as "SOLD-OUT" on their site.

Did go to another BB's near me today (after yesterday's misadventure!) but no luck - no stock available.

FWIW, I bought the drive a few days ago after seeing it in BestBuy thinking it was a steal. After using it for the past 2 days, I now know why its cheap. The drive does appear to shut off and disappear from your drive list after a period of inactivity. No biggie, but it can be annoying turning the drive off and on when you want to use it. Mine also doesn't appear to support USB 2.0 as the highest transfer speeds I have seen on this has been 11mb which is USB 1.1 speeds.

In time, I may take it out the case and use it as an internal, but I need to find out if it is SATA 300 first or if it SATA 150. Also, it gets hot as hell.

It is a 7K1000 model drive. I bought one and immediately removed it from the enclosure to use as an internal drive. 7200 RPM, 32MB cache, SATA 3Gb/s.

Thanks for the info. Newegg has the drive listed as $299. Defanitely a steal. I may have to buy another one and use them as internal raid0 for performance. I imagine that 2TB of space should be enough to hold me over for a couple years easy.

just got 2 in store in Holmdel, NJ

There were two or three left on the shelf.

Warranty is good until 4-24-2009 on both of them.

That would be incorrect. USB 1.1 is 12Mbits, not bytes per second. Thus, you take 12 and divide it by 8 and you have 1.5Mbytes per second. You are far exceeding USB 1.1. USB 2.0 is 480Mbits/second and thus has a theoretical bandwidth of 60Mbytes/sec. But, one device cannot take up more than 50% of the bus bandwidth, which means you are limited to 30Mbytes/sec for a USB 2.0 HDD. Then, of course, there are other factors that can and will reduce performance.

FYI...
