Hitach 1TB Drives any good?

I have had the 1 TB "B" for a while now. Works well -- fast and for my purposes, quiet and does not run hot. Not sure about reliability since only had it for a few months. They are a great deal -- always the cheapest 1TB I have seen.

I own four Hitachi 1 TB drives. Two are five-platter (I believe) and two are three-platter (I believe). I think that Hitachi has also used varying amounts of onboard cache.

I've only owned them since December, so I can't say much except that they spin and none have failed. I've measured them with HDTach and their read rates were fine for me. I use these on my servers and I really couldn't care less about their speed.

I ran a complete "chkdsk /r" scan of each of them. Especially the first two, which came from Tigerdirect.com. They were HORRIBLY packed. As you found, the Hitachis have consistently been cheaper than other brands of 1 TB drives. I have no idea why. I got my first pair (in December) for around $80 apiece after rebate.

Well, I added a link in plain text if you wanna take a look at it.

Why are they so much cheaper than everything else? ($70 for Western Digital 640gb)

What's the difference between 3 platters and 5 platters (other than that one has 3 platters and the other has 5)?

I don't know if you can find a five-platter Hitachi 1 TB drive anymore.

I haven't seen any numbers. The three-platter drives are higher density, but a five-platter drive might be faster anyway. It all depends.

Three-platter drives would usually run cooler and more quietly.

for you hitachi users whats your HD benchmark read scores for sequential reads?? im thinking of getting some of those 1 TB's for a big RAID storage array but will only do it if they are close to the 7200.12 otherwise ill stick with the seagates, 7200.12 500GB gets me 108MB/s and my 1TB gets me 103MB/s.

I just ran HDTune 2.55 on a Hitachi 1 TB 360 drive and a Hitachi 1 TB 330 drive. Both drives are attached to the same built-in Dell SATA controller (Intel ICH7) on a Dell SC440 server.

360 - 16 MB cache, 3 platters
Burst - 155 MB/sec
Max. - 117 MB/sec
Min - 55 MB/sec
Average - 89 MB/sec
Access time: 13.2 ms

330 - 32 MB cache, 5 platters
Burst - 140 MB/sec
Max. - 83 MB/sec
Min - 42 MB/sec
Average - 69 MB/sec
Access time: 12.9 ms

I got mine installed last night.

These are in my old P5B-D (ICH8) with old drivers.
Performance isn't really a concern as i use the big drives for storage only anyway.

Seems to be pretty decent.

Hitachi 1 TB

The Seagate 1.5 TB is really nice actually for numbers; i have three now.
Both of the new ones are doing better numbers than my old did when i first got it.

Just for comparison, here's a very old slow WD 1 TB Green (very full drive too).
