Some guy ran into the side of my car today, giant ass 'avalanche' truck. Left a pretty good dent and a long paint scrape, along with bending my antennae. We pulled off into an apartment complex, couple guys step out (didn't quite look like upstanding citizens) and say "you shouldn't have been there", and I try not to laugh, but do :p - Then I got on my cell and start to call the cops, while they're asking me why I'm calling them...then they jump in their truck and take off. Meanwhile I try to remember their license plate number as they go. 911 lady picks up and I tell her to jot down the license plate. She does. Then follows 2-3 hours out of my day to go get a drug test and file an accident report (both standard work policies).

So I didn't get much work done today, and the side of my car is fucked. Lame :\ - Haven't heard anything back yet (was about 12 hours ago).

This type of thing probably happens a lot. Will cops do anything? I feel much better that they will take care of it since they got the license plate. Would be pissed if they didn't do anything though.

Do you think you got an accurate plate number?

The last hit and run I had, I ended up asking a Sheriff's office in New York to go knock on a door for me. They did, and I found 'em. :D

Some years back in Philly, a guy ran a red and popped me from a side street and then took off. I jumped out of my still rolling car to get his plate, but was too late to get it all.

My car rolled into a parked Mercedes and did some damage, bringing the owner out of a nearby cafe. Some asshole woman pedestrian was yelling at me, "I saw it all and it was all your fault." I wanted to punch her.

As luck would have it, the guy driving behind this jamoke pursued him for blocks on his accord, got his number, and drove back and gave it to me, also offering to testify for me and finally shutting up the asshole female pedestrian, whom I still wanted to punch in her fat fucking busybody and totally wrong mouth.

I went right back to my office, and as a PI, I knew where he lived and a lot more about him within 20-30 minutes. I called him and left a strong but calm "you done wrong, now you can't run and you can't hide" phone message, mentioning all the details.

Then I went right to his home and put the fear of fucking GAWD into him in a low-key but no nonsense way.

I got estimates for my car the next day, as did the Mercedes owner, and with the fear of criminal action for leaving the scene of an accident hanging over him, the twerp promptly payed right up for all of it without one further peep.

They'll find the truck, especially if you have partial plate and make and model.

Hit and run is a criminal offense.

I don't think I could glance at a fleeing vehicle and remember a license plate number. My short term visual memory is crap.

I've posted about this before, but about 13 years ago I was heading home from my then-girlfriends house at ~2AM in the morning. I was driving my mother's 1993 toyota corolla, and had just come to a stop at the light at the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Smoketown road in Woodbridge VA. That is a pretty long light, so I settled in for a 3-4 minute wait. During that time, I peered up in my rearview mirror, and saw a set of headlights coming around the corner behind me. They got bigger, and bigger, and BIGGER. I thought "holy shit that fucker isn't slowing down!" Then WHAM! The bastard hit me square in the back of my car. Glass was everywhere, and my car was propelled 50 feet into the center of the intersection. Dioriented but thankfully unhurt, I got out of the car. Just as I got out, the truck that hit me (a late model white ford pickup truck) backed up, peeled out, and headed down smoketown road like a bat out of hell.

I didn't have time to see the license plate or take it down, but as luck would have it there was a police officer giving another motorist a ticket ~200 yards up the road. I sprinted up to the cop, explained the situation, and she told me to hop in the back of her car. I did. She got in the car, called an APB on the hit and run driver, and we took off chasing the truck down smoketown road. Within 5 minutes, we got a call over the radio. Some other cops had pulled this guy over. Apparently he was going ~100 MPH down smoketown road with no headlights (he broke both of them on the back of my car). We pulled up on the scene (a local gas station), and the truck that hit me was surrounded by ~10 cop cars. Perp was already in cuffs lying on the ground.

The perp was a freaking loser. A 40 year old man who lived at home with his mom and ran a small pipefitting business. He was drunk as a skunk when he hit me.

To make a long story shorter, this guy called me ~10 times before his trial, pleading with me to drop the charges. He even offered me 10K on top of the car repairs. I refused it all. During one conversation, I said "You didn't give a fuck about me when you left the scene, where I could have been dead, so I honestly don't give a fuck about you."

Ultimately, the guy spent 3 months in jail, had his license suspended for 2 years, and had to perform 800 hours of community service (giving talks to kids about the dangers of drunk driving). I felt that justice was served, even though the guy could have easily killed me.

Cops won't do SHIT about it. Fucking lady who parks near me used to hit my car all the time and run home before the Police showed up.

I'd show the Police MY PAINT ON HER CAR, and they say theres nothing they can do because she wasn't around.

I am not going to say how, but I got her back and she left the parking lot completely. Stupid bitch, I hope she dies.

At least you saw them. I just woke up and walked outside my house and saw a big ass dent.

Similar to me a few weeks ago. My roommate came in from the gym at 8PM on Friday night and handed me my driver side mirror. Luckily that was all damage but no note.

Everyone should invest in a traffic/dash cam. I've seen too many shit drivers drive away from fender benders to major collisions so I now stop at any accidents I witness.
