Even if the radiator support is bent, it can be removed and replaced easily. In the photos, it looks like both fenders are still straight, so odds are the inner fenders are as well. So the frame is likely good. As to the airbag not going off, it only does that with an impact on the bumper. Looks to me like the deer hit on the hood and not the bumper. Probably fixable.

That's good and bad to know. I would have preferred it to be non-fixable, but I'll accept a fixed car.

Also, thanks for letting me know that the bumper is usually the impact area that causes the airbags to deploy. I didn't know that. I'm really glad they didn't deploy.

Well, I got my rental car! It's a 2011 Nissan Rogue. It's fairly decent. Makes me want an SUV now. Now I'm hoping the car is totaled more and more. >_<

Sadly, the car wasn't completely paid off. I don't know what that truly means, but I'm assuming they would just pay me whatever the amount would be... so I don't think I could do that. :(
If its totaled, you can negotiate the payout with your insurance company. The lien holder gets their money first, the balance of your loan, and you get the rest.

Actually it's an accelerometer, longitudinally mounted, that ususally decides how/when to deploy the airbag(s). It's not technically an impact sensor, except it only fires when deceleration is consistent with an impact.

If you were to mount retro rockets to the chassis, you could (with sufficient thrust), trigger the airbags, without any impact damage to the front end at all.

^Yep

Airbag systems are not as simple as people think. Its pretty complex.

I have found owners manuals to go over the basics pretty well on how the airbag system operates (Car specific).

Anyone know what the resale value of one of these things would be with an accident like that? They're repairing the vehicle. It was in excellent condition before the accident, and it was essentially fully loaded except for the DVD/nav system or whatever.

Just claybar the Matrix and all will be well. :)

Glad you're OK. I was in a car with a girl and we totaled her accord when a deer ran in front of us. Entrails hanging off the front end, fur everywhere. Few minutes later, guys with a pickup truck listening to the police scanner showed up and got the OK to take the carcass for meat.

I liked that girl but she was bow-legged. Could never look past it. But that's a different story.

it actually doesnt look like that hard of a hit. the hood looks like its paper thin, and that would partly explain how they got the gas mileage out of those things that they do. airbags go off when the car slows down too fast... this deer wasnt big enough for that.

from when I hit a deer with my bmw.. the deer jumped at the last second, so I clipped it's hind quarter, causing it to slide up my hood into my windshield. I'm lucky it didn't go through the window, and as the cop said "that it wasn't a buck".

Thank god it was a BMW and not a nice car. :D

Used to get this a lot at the rental place when I worked north of the city. Spring and fall are the worst times for deer. They're certainly not the brightest of animals. Just be thankful you don't live in moose country. Hit one of those and you're walking away in a hearse.
