I have scoured my history texts, and i need to know the Present day names for cities called Agram, and Lemberg. I am sure that Breslau is Poland, and that Constantinople is now Istanbul, but these 2 i cannot find, i have reason to believe that Lemberg could be prenent day Ukraine?

thanks!

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul (Istanbul)
Istanbul (Istanbul)

Why they changed it I can't say

Breslau was a city in Poland, not Poland. Until the end of WWII its population was primarily German, hence the German name. It was renamed Wroclaw after the war.

just like danzig was renamed gdansk.

a lot of german cities were renamed, i assume, since poland moved 100 miles or so west at the end of wwii.

Thanks for the help guys! now lets put a little twist on this, in the 20th century i have discovered that Agram is located in Croatia, Breslau is in Poland, Constantinople is in Turkey, and Lemberg is in the Ukraine, but the problem i have now is finding maps of the countries these places were located in in the 19th century... any suggestions?

thanks!

OK, I think I can clarify this for you. Lemberg was a german language equivalent to Lviv (Ukrainian pronounciation) or Lvov (Russian pronounciation) In 19th century and until the end of WWI this city belonged to Poland which at the time was the subject of Russian Empire, after October Revolution in 1917 Poland managed to break away from Russia and establish an indepedant state until 1939, in September 1939 it was occupied by the Soviet Union as part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1938 which divided Poland between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, which in turn triggered WWII. When Germany attacked Soviet Union in June 1941 and occupied Lviv, it was again renamed to Lemberg, until 1944 when the city was "liberated" by the Soviets and was returned its original name Lviv/Lvov. In 1991 Ukraine gained independance and that is where it is located now. Historically speaking, this city was founded and built by ukrainians, but due to political turmoils, it for centuries remained the subject of different countries as most of Ukraine did.

If you need a present day location, look of the map of Ukraine (will be listed as Lviv), mid-late 20th century map of the Soviet Union (will be listed as Lvov), 19th-early 20th centuries maps of either Russian Empire or Poland (will be listed as either Lemberg or Lvov) Hope this helped.
