hissy shure e3c's?

i just got a pair, and while i'd expect a fair level or hiss on my laptop, i woulnd't expect anything this noticable with my ipod. actually, to be fair they aren't as bad with the ipod, but they are still noticable.

could this set be a bad set of headphones, or is this normal?

wow... that hiss really degrades the sound quality. so these are that much better than the standard ipod heaphones that they amplify the imperfections?

btw, anyone else have the hardest time getting these to stay put in the ears?

I am not sure on the phones, but high gains bring out ipod problems.

i have e2c's but i imagine it's the same setup and that there are multiple typs of ends you can use. Perhaps use a larger piece.. of course i could be wrong and talking out of my ass, in which case appologies.

Neither onboard sound on a notebook nor ipods are known for high sound quality; try hooking the phones up to a decent source, try listening to lossless music, and make sure they're seated properly in your ears.

hmmm i guess i can deal with the hiss more so than the fact they slip out of the ear. i guess i outta try different sized sleeves.

anyone else have an issue with the wire slipping off the back of the ear?

It sounds like the iPod "audio defect", assuming you have a Click-Wheel or iPod Photo. Does the hissing get louder as you turn up the volume, or is it constant (i.e. you can make it less noticeable by turning up the volume)?

I've had the e3c for a couple of months now and I love them. It saves me from hearing all the noise produced by the local students on the train.

They should not be slipping out of your ear. You need to make sure that you stick it firmly into your ear canal. If they're still falling out, try a bigger size. I like the small ultra-soft flex sleeves.

The wire goes behind my ear, but I don't lead the wire to my back as they do on their website. I just have the wire go in the front like other earphone wires. Give it a tug after you have them inserted in your ear and behind your ear. That design makes it hard to pull out if everything is set.

I find the foam inserts to be the best for isolation and fit. They take a while to get used to though. I'm considering getting custom molds, but I've heard they cost $200+ :shocked:

Oh, and the hiss is probably your source. Find a decent source to test the phones off of.

nah, you can get just your ear canal molded for ~$100 (both)

if you want a full ear mold (both ear canal and outer ear) it's $200. my brother had this done for his westones monitors. i personally like the full ear mold. my ears are close enough to my brothers where i can wear his ... although he hates it when i do.

very true ... but the custom molded ones are very comfortable and when spending $600+ on monitors that need to be worn for a while, the extra expense is worth it.

and the molds come with cleaning solution .. and he is my brother, after all.

You don't have the common iPod "audio defect" where the hissing is introduced after the headphone volume amplification, and does not increase with volume. I trim mine with an external potentiometer volume control. I would exchange it in-store, have the "Genius" listen to the nasty hissing.

Pretty much any non-terrible source. The iPod buds are pooptown.
