Hello all,

I just bought a shuttle case and put a Intel Penitum 2.8GHz processor in it. I have actually built two of these things and they both do the exact same thing. Every time something is processing on the computer, the processor or something by the processor makes a loud squealing noise. This squealing noise happens when it starts up (at certain times) ... when I copied a bunch of stuff over the network, or when I just hold the mouse button down in certain applications... It sounds like the processor when I gutted the whole thing to try and listen to what it might be. Has anyone else had this issue with this machine? It's weird since it happens in both of them that I own. Is there some power setting in the bios I might have to set? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

i had a very simliar problem.

it occured with a shuttle miniATX board i bought for an AMD system back last september. like you, it was an annoying high pitched whine that would occur when the processor was doing something intensive. i noticed it first when running photoshop. it was very annoying because i was trying to create a very quiet PC, and the whine was unbearable.

my solution? i looked online and couldn't find too much information about it, beyond that it might have something to do with the amp/voltage in one of the capacitators on the motherboard vibrating at a very high frequency under high loads. my own simple audio test did narrowed it down to something on the motherboard. i tried things like a different PSU, it didn't work.

in the end i returned it to newegg and got an MSI motherboard. i have been happy since with it.

this was my first purchase of something by shuttle, and i must say it was unimpressed.

Are you sure that this isn't your hard drive spinning up... they can sometimes have extremely annoying spin-up sounds especially if they are 10,000 rpm.

case?

i got this one:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-154-016&depa=0

it's bigger than your typical shuttle case, but smaller than a mid-tower. i care more about how quiet it is than the size, anyway.

this is the shuttle board i ended up replacing:

this is the MB i replaced it with:

other components was 2700 DDRAM, 120 seagate HHD, and an AMD 2500+ Barton CPU. the quiet PSU i used was a seasonic super tornado 300, although i have to manual start the fan with a screwdriver each time the computer is turned on, so i don't recommend it :)
