Hissing sound from new mainboard...Gigabyte

Just brought a Gigabyte 7N400-L to replace the suddenly dieing MSI board as of yesterday. When the CPU's on full load (i.e. Prime95) it produces a repeatitive hissing sound whilst CPU is on full load from the PSU section.

I tried google and searching forums. No answer.

Is this normal? I think not.

Coil whine. It is a wonderful combination of some mb's, power supplies and vid cards. Lots of info on coil whine on the silentpcreview.com forum. Also, how do you know it is the motherboard?

If the CPU is at full load, there's a good chance that the CPU fan is spinning at full speed, so that may be making the hissing noise. I've never heard of a processor chip actually making any audible noise, but I suppose there's a first time for everything. Do you notice any significant loss in performance?

Erm no. I held the fan dead. Its definately "coil whine" as I hear it from there myself.

CPU's cant make noise like that, it is the coils on the motherboard. Sometimes it is the power supply. It took me forever to narrow it down to the coils on my mb, but that was what it was in the end. Also, there is no fix. Sometimes a different brand power supply fixes it, sometimes not. Is your power supply an Antec by any chance?

Not an Antec. I've got a spare PSU to hand so ill give that a shot. Its basically due to bad choice of coils for the board causing vibrations where power fluctations (or in this case, increases).

Should it still fail, I may just swap back in the replacement MSI mainboard and sell this Gigabyte - My computer's reasonably quiet until this happened.

On my spare PSU now - still noisy. I guess this board's going back to the shop. If only they had those ABIT NF7-S in stock in the first place...
