Okay fine, I try to learn from my mistakes so I tried to learn spanish just enough to be able to get my message across-they get insulted that I think they can't speak english.

i've never once met a spanish person that got offended from me trying to speak spanish to them.

generally speaking they love it when americans try to speak their language.

but what do i know, i'm only married to a nicaraguan and my best friend growing up was 1/2 mexican 1/2 spanish!!
 
I hear you.

My gf is Colombian so whenever I go into a spanish/hispanic market, I get these weird looks. I tried being nice. I talk in Spanish, they hate me. I talk in English, they hate me. So, my gf just instructed me to go in the store and look at the floor.

Luckily, the Market Basket in Chelsea, MA now has all my Spanish grocery needs.
 
The only solution is to live in a Spanish speaking country for 10 years, learn to speak the language perfectly, come back to the U.S., and then speak to them in Spanish.

If they are still offended, slap them with a wallet and say, "good day!" and stomp off into the sunset.
 
You obviously don't know many Hispanic people. They are thrilled if you attempt to speak Spanish. I have never once in my entire life met or talked to someone who was offended that I began speaking to them in English.
 
Most Mexicans I know are alright with whitey speaking Spanish to them, even if you butcher it horribly.

I however, despite being Mexican, am very offended when Mexicans start jabbering at me in Spanish, just because I'm brown. We're in America, speak English.

Maybe he works retail. Everyone at retail stores is a piece of shit. Hitler was probably a cashier at Walmart and he decided to kill Jews because he was tired of them trying to haggle the prices when he obviously has no control over the price.
