That's always confused me as well. Latin (the language) was invented and used primarily in Europe, so let's refer to people from South America as Latin. I remember the Spanish language being influenced by Latin, but aren't most European languages? Maybe the Spanish (people) can be Latin, but I still don't understand why it became a term for people of S. America.

latino = from latin america (south america, southern mexico)
chicano = mexican from texas, arizona, new mexico

i know there is one more that represents spain, jut not remebering it off the top of my head...

Native Spaniards are considered hispanic? I know the term Hispanic comes from Spain (obviously), but I always considered the term hispanic as referring to the present mix of the indiginous people of S. America and the Spanish conquistadors. I mean, it's Europe after all. I've never been to Spain, were/are they not considered Caucasian? Damn you public schools!

Hispanic is just someone who's native language is spanish, which is why a hispanic can be of any race hence why you fill out white non-hispanic or black non-hispanic.

An example may be someone like David Ortiz or Edgar Rentaria. They are obviously black but are considered to be hispanic.

Hispanic = 90's PC. Since not enough people were being offended, easily offended white people decided that for the 2000-2010 decade the term "hispanic" would be offensive and that "Latino" would be PC. Speculation is that "Spanish" will take the place of "latino" for 2010-2020, while of course "latino" will be considered vulgar and offensive. In a decidedly retro move, the white PC elite has decided that "black" will be in again for black people starting in 2010, while the derogatory term "African-American" will be considered hateful KKK propaganda. Are you serious? How can anyone consider it offensive? Is it disdain for the Spanish?
I'm curious how something offensive can be used so widely, by governments, companies, et cetera, et cetera.

These are irrelevant labels.

Regardless of which one you choose, everyone knows that if you live in Florida, you are a Cuban, if you live in Texas, Arizona or California, then you are Mexican, and if you live in New York, you are Puerto Rican (or sometimes Dominican)

:p

Maryland or Virginia = El Salvadorian (w/the 1 exception of my girlfriend and her family - they are Nicaraguan.

I'm sure not offended by being called hispanic (I'm puerto rican) and I never heard anyone being offended by it either.
