HIS HD4870 .... Fan speed reading as ZERO?!?!

Can't really figure this out. Every program I have tried to use is reading the fan speed on the card as zero when it is in actuality turning just fine. Using windows 7 64 bit and the newest ATI drivers. The fan is just stuck running full speed which is annoying and want to be able to adjust it! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yes that is my card. Didn't really pay much attention to it when installing. What's my best option to quite the thing down? New cooling solution? Accelero S1?

If you want to do it on the cheep you could attach it to you motherboard

and attach the VC fan to it and manually change its speed.

If you take this route, I'd add an extra fan blowing on the VRMs. (the black HS by the power connectors)

Only problem with that is I would have to reach behind my comp and crank it up every time I play a game right?

I would just get a better cooling solution all together...(I always say if your're gonna do something do it right or don't do it at all)

my 4890 does the same thing...

Luckily, mine has the Zalman cooler from the factory so its not TOO bad... (loudest part of my PC still)

I've done this rheostat fix for a couple cards. You can usually find a sweet spot where the fan makes a bit less noise but the cooling is adequate. Augmenting the cooling with an extra fan blowing on the back side of the card usually helps in the viability.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have an antec 900 case so I don't think cooling will be an issue. I guess I'll give that little thing a try for 3 bucks and see how it does!

But does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket cooling?

Just because the fan only has two wires doesnt necessarily mean it's not adjustable. Try ATI Tray Tools. I used that on my 4850 before I just gave up and put an Accelero S1 on it. The Accelero plus a Zalman heatsink on the VRM's works great (dremel required on the Zalman heatsink).

The 3rd wire is an RPM sensor, the speed is still adjustable on 2 wire fans you just can't get an RPM reading on it, so you just go by percentages.

RivaTuner works on ATI cards too and you can set fan speed with it, I'd try that out too.

I stuck a rheostat (Zalman Fanmate) on my 4850, and realized its default (i.e., max) fan speed was MASSIVE overkill. Even at the lowest setting where my fan is now completely inaudible over my 120mm case fan, my card doesn't get past 65C while gaming.

Rivatuner and Tray tools does not work :/ Guess I'll buy that thing for $3 and try it out!
