Hiring day laborers you see on the street

So I need to move my stuff from my apartment to a rental truck and I was considering hiring 1-2 of those guys you see on the street looking for work.

Anybody ever hire them?

What's the going rate for this stuff?

I was thinking 40 bucks an hour.

Why are you moving into a rental truck? Won't it be cramped?

And $40 an hour?? Per person?? You could probably get the whole family for the day for that much.

Hell, most of us here in the US legally or who are citizens would do that in a heartbeat for $40/hr. Hell, I would if I were in the area. You may be shooting a little too high there. If you are willing to spend that much, maybe you have some family members or other people you could trust (more than somebody off teh street you don't know at all) who would need that kind of money.

$12.50/hr is the recommended rate.

Remember if they hurt themselves working for they can sue you for a workers comp injury. No joke!

I'd place an ad on Craigslist and some non-illegals who own a backyard moving Company $25/hr.

Godd forbid one of the illegals steals your stuff.

Yeah, that's why I'm only hiring 1 guy. I'll be with him the whole time.

No way that's going to happen.

1. There's no way to prove that I even hired the guy.

2. "Officer, this guy was trying to steal my furniture."

LOL

considering you have no control over these people touching your personal property, its pretty stupid. they have little to loose from trying to run off with something valuable. its not like ur going to be able to tell the cops any reliable info..let alone that you "hired" them once you've been taken for a ride.

The strategy...

1. Help OP load up the truck
2. When finished, push OP down the stairs
3. Drive off with OP's stuff
4. Free houseful of stuff! AND a truck!

$40 a hour... when do i start.

But I would offer $10 a hour. Tell the guy its easy and you will provide crappy food... I mean a meal at McDonalds for lunch.

You're a tool. No way can you predict the future of your actions, let alone someone else's. To say otherwise reveals your naivete.
#1. Since there will be a rental truck with it's doors open , half filled, it doesn't take Matlock to figure out what's going on. Then the cop becomes their witness in your attempt to decieve. At the very least I hope you have Renter's Insurance.
#2. It's unlikely you can monitor their EVERY move.
Pros will work in teams. 2>1
You are at risk for a hostile takeover by hiring someone offf of the street if you are alone.

#3. By hiring workers off the streets, you help maintain the status quo. You become as complict in the "immigration issue" as Swift Meat Packing executives.

Better you should hire from CL or Labor Ready.

I've hired some guys a couple times. Made things really easy to not have to do all the heavy lifting myself. Paid somewhere around $10-$20/hr IIRC.
